I like to think that if Matt Moore halfway cared about all the people here that are giving his company some of the best free advertising for his company he could ask for, he would tell Mikey G. to back off and keep his mouth shut. He should remember who the folks are that are out here showing the world how sweet these bikes are, and if they wanted to start telling the world that the new Big Dog Motorcycles are no longer the bikes to buy, it could really hurt his sales of new bikes.

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
I recall when Big Dog went out of business. Then Matt Moore re-started and made KMW (Kansas Motor Works) bikes. Then he re-acquired the Big Dog name (2015?) and started making bikes using the Big Dog badge again.
I’m also remembering how some members were pissed that he didn’t pretend to stock parts and honor and claims regarding ‘pre Matt Moore’ bikes because the original Big Dog no longer existed, so the older bikes (and any claims) were separate from the new Big Dog corporation. Interesting how this guy now claims rights to (and implied damages to the new company) to the manuals specific to pre-2016 bikes they heretofore disclaimed.
Chubs is right—his approach is petty and bad for business—-I only know a little about publishing but will guarantee the royalty $$ to Big Dog are inconsequential. Considering the bad blood created (see Chubs, above) they certainly do need to back off. I think many of us would be interested in what a copyright lawyer might have to say, because it seems to me any harm done would be relevant to the non-existent BD company and as such—poof—up in smoke.

AI Overview

The copyright to the pre-2011 Big Dog Motorcycle shop manuals was originally held by

Big Dog Motorcycles, LLC, the company founded by Sheldon Coleman in 1994. A 2000 owner's manual clearly indicates "Copyright 2000 Big Dog Motorcycles LLC" and states that no part of the publication can be reproduced without written permission from the company.

However, Big Dog Motorcycles, LLC went out of business in 2011. Afterward, its lender, Intrust Bank, N.A., foreclosed on the company's assets and intellectual property. The intellectual property rights were subsequently transferred through several entities, ultimately to Mathew Moore (MNM).

Matt Moore, a former Director of Sales for the original company, and his family now own the rights, trademarks, and goodwill of the defunct company and are operating the current Big Dog Motorcycles entity. This current entity sells parts to service pre-2011 Big Dog Motorcycles. The Big Dog Motorcycles website currently offers service manuals for various pre-2011 models for sale, including manuals for the 1999-2004 and 2009-11 model years, indicating that they hold the necessary rights to distribute these manuals.

Therefore, the current Big Dog Motorcycles entity, under the ownership of Matt Moore and his family, is the entity that now owns and manages the copyright to the pre-2011 Big Dog Motorcycle shop manuals.

There are no longer any Big Dog motorcycle dealerships in the United States. Big Dog Motorcycles, which was based in Wichita, Kansas, was founded in 1994, but closed down in 2011. Although the company recently reopened as Big Dog Is Back, they do not have any active dealerships at this time. The company is currently focusing on manufacturing and selling parts, rather than motorcycles through a dealer network.

With no dealerships/designated repair shops available today, the big dog motorcycle is an abandoned machine that the parent company assumes no responsibility for either warranty or repair. Having access to the shop manuals allows owners to have a starting place for troubleshooting and repair.
