Runs then quits

Background: My dog has been sitting about 3 months because I have slowly taken off the primary and replacedthe tranny and oring seals. The tranny was leaking into the primary.

Yesterday I finally got it all back together and she fired up perfectly. Ran for abou 10 minutes then shut off. I immediately tried to restart her and she would not turn over. I looked in the gas tank and it is hard to see in there, so I went and got 3 gallons of gas and added it to the gas tank. Still nothing. I took off the breather sprayed carb cleaner in and that would cause her to turn over by only for seconds. It was getting late so I let it sit till this evening.

When I got home tonight, I went to try and start it up, she started right up. Ran for less than 10 minutes. This time I went to drive her around the block and she quit before I could make the square block around my house. Good news is from replacing the tranny seal and putting back on the primary she seems to shift and run fine (only got to second gear though).

What would cause her to start perfectly when cold but then minute she gets a little warm she shuts off?

Recommend disconnecting the fuel line going to the CARB, turn the tank valve on and see if you get a good stream of fuel, if not check the in line filter or remove the tank valve and clean the screen.

If all is good there, turn tank valve off....drain the CARB bowl by removing the plug under the CARB then remove the CARB bowl and spray CARB cleaner in every orifice you see, check the needle valve to ensure it's not sticking..... with the CARB bowl off, reinstall the plug, let fuel flow into the bowl until it shuts off then check the height of the float when fuel stops running, the float should be about 1/8 inch below the top of the bowl, empty the bowl and ensure it fills up again, if not check the needle valve on the other end of the float. Obviously, you need to do this over a container.

I had the same problem with a 2007 K9 and it was my charging system. Changed out crank sensor, stator and rotor.

I doubt it's the stator but just put in a good ign system system and that would work. Screw the crank sensor crap....

Ok, I replaced the battery (to eliminate that problem). I had left the fuel-cock off all day and it would not crank even cold.

I pulled the gas line and plenty of gas pouring out, so the screen must be ok.

I then pulled the plug from the bowl and hardly any gas was in the bowl. Maybe an ounce if I had to guess. I pulled the throttle back about 10 times and still barely in fuel in the carb. (I did this with the key off)

Next I pulled the gas cap off (trying to make sure it is venting) and pulled the throttle back about 10 times. Still no gas coming from bowl. Key was still off.

I will now drop the bowl and clean the inside. Here is hoping. But if I am testing this correctly it certainly seems gas related.

Mike - turning the throttle without fuel in the bowl does nothing. There must be fuel in the CARB bowl so the accelerator pump in the CARB can get fuel. Even if the bowl was full you cannot see it squirt fuel while turning the throttle. If the bowl was empty, assuming you turned the tank valve on, the needle valve may be stuck. Pull the bowl and push up and down on the float, look at the small part of the float and see if the needle valve is moving up and down. To clean you'll see a screw about 1/4 inch in diameter, remove the screw and gentle pick up the float with the needle valve attached. Clean the valve and the port the valve sits in. After cleaning, reassemble, with bowl off, plug in the bottom, turn tank valve on, the bowl should fill then stop when the float rises.

Thank you Rick, I sat down and ate. So pulling the bowl now. And will follow your instructions.

Mike...pull the bowl straight down, try not to tear the gasket and be careful not to lose the little blue o-ring on top of the brass tube in the bowl, it's less than a 1/4 in in diameter.

Problem was the carburetor. I took the bowl off cleaned it up real good and the bike seems happy now. So this has happened twice to me now. Once in 2014 and now. Hope this helps

Also, it's a good idea to put STA-BIL fuel stabilizer in your system if your not going to run the bike for an extended period of time.
