we took a trip to maui hawaii last week and decided to do a little riding.the first day we looped the north side of the island.a very beautiful, yet downright scary ride at times.rocks, falling rock, hairpin turns,2000 ft cliffs and no guard rail.it was a crazy ride.well the next day we take a trip on the road to hana.630 turns 25 one lane bridges and by the time we made it back to the hotel the wife was 100% finished with riding.i told the guy at the harley dealer about our tour and he said i was crazy taking those two rides back to back.what a beautiful ride and it was a little trecherous,i guess riding a big tire, not so great handling big dog around west virginia all these years helped a lot.has anyone else taken this ride?if you have then you know the tail of the dragon is childs play.

Last time I did the road to Hana we were in a 15 passenger van and lost the right steering control arm which made it real interesting. Next time Im going to do it on a bike.

Did the road to Hanna several years ago in a Jeep. Thought I was gonna PUKE! My head was spinning at the end. Can not imagine it on a bike. Miss a turn and you DIE!

Took the Hana Highway ride a few years ago in a rental car. Made it halfway up and my daughter was scared to death and crying so we went back down. I'll have to admit, it made me a bit nauceous.

believe it or not the north loop around the island is the more frightning of the two.i would not do either again with a touring bike and a passenger.scary

Well I rode that Hanna loop way back in 1979, but it was on a bicycle. Beautiful area for sure and maybe one of these days will do it a again.

It's a stunning ride. I did it in a Jeep and continued all the way around after spending a few days in Hana. Will do it again on a bike any day, and I will....

lived in Hawaii for 10 years loved Maui, never rode the bike but one of my favorite places for sure.
did you take a trip to the 7 falls? its a stop on the road to Hana cool place.

i made the mistake of going all the way around.the road became unpaved and trecherous at one point.when i returned the harley he told me they dont cover anything if there is a problem or damage past hana.also the same on the road i took around the north side.i guarantee my wife will not join me again on those rides.i would do hana again.believe it or not the loop around the north side was much more trecherous.i would not ride it again:loony:

we had a map with mile markers and stopped at several falls including the one you mentioned.beautiful falls.we took a 20 min hike to one .the path to get there was a trip.we had to scale the side of a mountain with a rope at one point.my wife about hated me at this point:rant:

I'm the typical bad boy mainlander. I'm an ex-roadracer so Hana was quite fast. My mother was pissed off the scenery was moving too quick, and I loved looking down if we fucked up. Been going to the islands for a good part of 14 years worth. So this time, me and the old lady take a drive on the big island. I spin the rental, a telephone utility guy comes around the corner all pissed looking. Never hit anything while in that slow, wet control of an almost 360 swing around. Then, speeding thru this sweeper [on the same island], a single lane comes into play with that one small bridge(s) you yield for? I get the locals all yelling to slow down, me taking the bridge first at a good clip. Those were the early years.

You have to imagine, I'm there for almost 2 weeks with island fever and the same old road to race on? Pass thanks. It sure is one of the most prettiest places on earth that needs less hotels and tourists though.

Since that won't be happening soon, in the town of Paia, John can tell you about the pancake house, you try to finish one of those off.

on a bicycle.you are the man.
I don't know about that, but back in the day did a great deal of bicycle riding, much for enjoyment, allot for training and many miles racing. Used to race in USCF at Cat 1 and even had International licences. Did the Ohau Perimeter rice a couple of times which is the basic for the Bike Portion of the Ironman. Even was on an Italian Team in 1990-92 that one the Sud Italian Championship twice while I was on it. Not the best leader, but a very good domestic at the time, but could pull off some good finish in many Point to Point races and the occasional criterion.

Also at that time I was on a buoy tender where we worked all the Island and some of the South Pacific, so draggin a bike with me as many did, was an great way to get around from place to place.

Today I would be good if I could get 2 miles without having a heart attack.

Did it a few years ago and it rained the whole time. Was wearing shorts and sandals. Pretty scary/stupid.

Drove the Hana highway in a car a couple years ago. Don't think I'd want to do that one on a Big Dog. Took an ultralight flight in Hana. Now that was cool!!
