Ok. So I put the new starter in and tried starting without the primary cover on so I could make sure it worked before I put it back together. The starter is engaging but it won't spin the gear. It just unscrews the bolt that holds the gear on to the starter. Any thoughts?

Completely new starter ? Did you get the spacers and everything fitting back together correctly ? Mine had a lockwasher that kept that bolt from spinning. If you dont have that, you could always use threadlocker.

What did the lock washer look like? If I used threadlocker would I ever be able to take the bolt back out? Any other input is greatly appreciated.

If you don't have compression releases I would highly recommend either an electric setup or the S&S easy start cam which I don't have on my site yet but I can get them. This will greatly extend the life of your starter.
For a starter
GOOD (I know it says Big Dog but it will work in your AIH)
BEST(Same thing says Big Dog but will work in your AIH)

Personally I like the ultima starter comes with a slam button installed and the price is right! X2 on the compression release! The big inch motors kill the starters with the amount of compression.

2008 AIH has compression releases like BDM.

The starter is hidden under the fake oil tank and a slam button might work if an extended button is made.

Do you have an open primary, I forget?

Primary oil in the starter causes issues sometimes.

Enclosed primary. Taking the starter it to my buddy tomorrow to see if he can pull it apart to see whats wrong with it.
