I read some good stuff on how to do this and the torque specks. I want to know if I am only replacing the lower rocker box gasket do i have to let the tention off the push rods? Why cant I just leave them set? Is it ok to pulkl the rocker assembly and then the box without messing with the push rod tention? That seems a little more involved and I have read too many ideas on how to adjust them. 2nd, I spun out a screw on the rocker box cover becauser the dealer gave me torque specs in ft lbs instead of inch lbs. I found if I go to a longer screw I can catch another 1/4 inch of thread and it seems to be good. Would you do what I did with the longer screw or would you helacoil (spelling)??? Hope I can get some input soon. thx

I went to the S & S web site but when I click on the PDF it brings up a blank page. I am goint to call tomorrow. What do you think about the stripped rocker box cover 1/4 screw? Longer works or helacoil?

helicoil but there is not alot of torque on those
I would have to do a search and see what the torque value is

Funny how you forget some things :bang: I must be getting old
(Just not as old as Ray)

If the holes are stripped, recommend a Helicoil and then use about 90-100 inch lb for torque of the cover bolts.

I would think that if you can get another 1/4" of fresh threads that it would be enough to hold down the rocker box cover. They don't require a lot to hold them down. Just be sure to use a thread locker (locktite blue) to keep the bolt from vibrating loose. If you see it gives you problems down the road, it's not that major to pull it and go the other route.

His past "vast experience" in this particular area shows, doesn't it folks? :2thumbs:

I know you didn't just disrespect my authoritie! This is coming from the guy that said Kapn's valve dropped at low RPMs. :job: You must have been on dope or dog food when you said that. What the hell were you thinking? :loony:

Just replaced rocker box gaskets on 02 Mastiff. You have to let the pressure off pushrods. You don't have to remove them or adjust them. Make sure rocker support on left side goes on the same way it came off. I put one on backwards and it made the valve stick from rubbing against it. Gaskets came with directions. I think torque was 15 to 18 ft lbs.

After you remove the rocker box, don't the lifters expand? I'm pretty sure they do. So when you go to put it back together, the pushrods are probably setting up to high. It's not that big a deal to collapse the pushrods and re-adjust when you put it back together. I'm not sure if there are any issues with using the rocker box bolts to compress the lifters back down, but I do know that when you are adjusting the pushrods, you have to give each one about 15 to 20 minutes before moving on to the next. This give the lifters time to adjust where you can spin the pushrod with your fingers. Compressing 2 lifters at the same time could cause some issues. I'll have to let someone else chime in on that for verification.

I had one of the bolts on my rocker box strip at 80 in lbs. Lucky pulled the spiral alum thread out with the bolt. did like you and got the longer bolt. Redid all the rocker top bolts at 60 in lbs including the longer one. No problems no leaks ! :2thumbs:
