Repairing your Big Dog factory grips

Derrick has had the rubber inserts for our grips made, and they are easy to install. And cheap enough if you even to send the metal part out and have it rechromed, if need be. Here's my new rubber set.

One of the sets I needed to do, the chrome was still in good shape. So I'm just going to replace the rubber.
First, I took some needle nose pliers, and grabbed the plastic insert, and twisted it in a circle, to pull it out.


This one came out in one piece, but the other came out in 3.


Then do the same thing with the rubber, pushing it to the inside as you twist.

Clean everything up, then grab the new rubber like this. Notice one end has a longer tab, it goes out.

With the round part pointing out, fold the strips inward.

Poke it in the grip, and with your finger start to unroll it, and push it into place.

When I ran out of finger, I took a wooden dowel and continued on down, making sure it was all pushed into place.

Now to get the new plastic insert back in. After a lot of looking, I found that a 24mm socket fit perfect.

And to get it to slide easy, I remembered I just tossed an empty Dawn dish washing soap bottle out, that had just enough in it, to coat the plastic tube.


The plastic tube slid easily into the grip, then I used the socket to push it the last inch, into place. Then rinsed everything clean.

Think it was just a thebstaring auction price ended up selling at $60, which is what i saw them originally listed at.

Great Article, Shannon, I guess this is what winter is good for, cleaning up your ride. I need to replace my grips as the chrome has blistered on both grips. I was waiting for an excuse to start, since none presented itself. I guess I'll attempt it. Thanks Shannon for getting me up off the lazyboy and out to the shop. Got to get an order into Donna.

Well the Covid-19 has had me very close to home. My favorite chrome shop is closed, so I just purchased a new set of grips. Installed them along with new foot pegs. I'll have the old grips re-chromed when they open, or if they open. Yes all my Coronas were virus free, they helped me get the install without loosing my cable ends. Yes I did loose one and I ordered two new ones from Eric but just as soon as I hung up the phone I found the lost one. Now I have a backup set just incase I need them. Next item is new rocker boxes. Got therm ordered. Here is my grips and pegs.
