Reintroduction/New 2005 Chopper/Fried EHC/Advice!

FREEDOM!!!
Next Update: Th3infamous! hit the nail on the head. Took off the gas tank, got into the wiring, disconnected the rear compression release valve that didn't work, and success. 12vdc solid to the starter solenoid. Hooked it back up and can bump the engine over like normal. The shorting compression release valve took out the voltage to the starter circuit.

NOTHING WRONG WITH THE AXEL EHC58!!!!

I've emailed Curtis and Axel informing them of the results and much thanks to both of them and everyone who chimed in with advice here on the BD Forum. It takes a village to fix a Big Dog!!!

THANKS!!!

Great News!

Doesn't need a village....its just always easier bumping ideas off people.

You'll find if you take it slow, isolate the issues and you'll have good luck. Especially with electrical, I actually enjoy working through the electrical issues the most. I'm a sick bastard like that. Ha

By the way, it´s good to read that the internal fuse in my EHC works in the real life without damage at the EHC. I had it only tested in my workshop and real life is quite different :)

All the best!

No ride yet. Went to put back together Sunday am but instead got, "Could you just fix the sliding glass doors first?", "We're having your brother visit next weekend, could you just power wash the patio area?", "Some tiles are loose, could you just.....AHHHHHH!!!!

Will attempt to sneak into the garage tonight after work and every day this week until I get it done. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!

2004BC ,
any update yet? How's that mechanic in Boynton Beach referred by Sachs?
Hope all is well
Hi Rally,
Reassembled everything, drained the gas tank, had seafoamed it and the carb, put new 93 gas in and fired it up. I don't believe the carb had been finish jetted yet so I started by run short times to first set the idle speed and air/fuel. Then I started adjusting the accelerator pump. Everything running has improved up to this point. Oh, and I was wrong about the carb. I assumed it was a G but it is in fact a shorty E. The bike fires up instantly idles and blips nice so far. I just took my brother to the airport this morning so now I'm freed up. Road test now, low speed running up to 50 or so for intermediate jet and 50 to 70 roll on for main. This week I hope! To be continued........

050 intermediate jet? That's a typo....i don't even think they make them over 040. Which either way is Wayyy to big youll be getting about 3 mpg..haha

Glad to here the news 2004BC Electrical can take a few tries to get right sometimes.
:chopper::chopper::old2:
Especially going through the EHC. I had no idea the short in the rear compression release valve would be electrically connected to the starter circuit but now it makes sense. Push the start button and releases energize AND starter solenoid engages. The guys who advocated old school wiring do have a point as far as simple logical electrical diagnostics go. You can trace out each circuit/wire point to point no problem.

Update: Once the bike would start reliably I worked on the carb. It actually still had the original jets that came with the Shorty E. Changed up to intermediate 36 and main jet 78. Cleaned everything out and readjusted idle, accelerator pump but still popping. Caps on the 3 vent fittings on top of the carb were cracked and dry rotted. Replaced and readjusted everything. Good. Finally took it out for shakedown run today and everything was good. Stupid quick. Went and filled up with gas and rode back but suddenly bike ran explosively backfiring. Pulled over and all 3 caps had blown off the carb. Got some twigs, jammed them in the barbed fittings holes, and rode home perfect. Working on a permanent block off now. Otherwise the dog is insane, loud as hell, and scary. Just as it should be. The only thing I might need is pine tar like the baseball players use to make sure I don't fly off when nailing it. Thanks all for your help and life is good!!!

With a 36 INT your going to have some pretty bad gas mileage I reckon. Seems a little too big, but if you like it whatever.

Probably so. I don't know what the stock one was, it wasn't marked for some reason, so I over reacted with the 36. I have a 33. Air/fuel screw is about 1 1/4 turned out from seating right now. 33's more realistic for a built 117? I haven't taken it down to be optimized on the dyno but John Sachs said his build should be around 145 or so HP. Also, opinion on the main 78. Stock was 70. Thanks!
