Question About Storing Your Dog

Where I live now(west TN), I don't have a doghouse for the dog. She's spent the first week home covered under one of the breathable, water resistant motorcycle covers. It rained/snow stormed here the 2nd night after I bought it. Good thing I planned ahead, eh? I didn't remove the cover for about 4 days(while the snow melted/temps worked their way back up).

I plan on getting a storage facility for it in the next few days. :whoop:

Now that I've removed the cover and rode some today, I notice the allen style bolt heads sticking out from the top of the heads are discolored. Not sure I'd call it rust, but looks like it is headed that direction quickly. Could this be due to being covered with all the moisture that was in the air?

Is there a cleaner that would be easy to get down into the bolt heads to remove the discoloration? Am I stuck with it? Are they simple to replace if that's what I have to do?

Does anybody else get stuck storing their Dog outside and know of a more breathable alternative as far as a cover goes?

Oh, I forgot to mention. I paged around looking for the info already on here somewhere, but couldn't find it. If it's already on here, a link would be sweet.

Thanks ya'll :2thumbs:

I live in Middle Tenn ,, over to tha left , My ole scooter had been left out in the weather for a few months before I got it,,I spent a lot of time cleaning and polishing,,Mine has some rust around those bolts,,I ever sets out any more but sets in an unheated garage and sweats as it gets cold and then warmer,, I just wax and polish the crap out it regurlarly, and for the most part it stays covered up,, you might put some coke down in those bolt holes in the top,, I've heard coke will eat minor rust, discolored metal where you can clean it up. or get some billet caps for the bolts ,,

To fix the rust in the bolt heads, twist some fine steel wool around a small dowel rod and spray it with WD40. Twist the dowel inside the bolt head and it should clean up the rust....hope this helps.

Although my bikes, are garage kept, I have used with success, a good quality chrome polish, with some Q tips. Just twirl them around the inside of the allen head.

Metal on metal will cut into each other. These cuts can cause even more rust. The thing is coke, vinegar, or molasses. Coke may have that one ingredient so it has to sit on the bolt or remove it to clean.

Yes, condensation is the killer. Take marine grade grease, slap a wad of grease into the bolt housing and cover the hardware. Lay a waxy film over the paint and do not remove. Spray bottle and AFT inside it, begin to spray the engine, transmission, rims, and inside an empty gas tank with it. Any exposed metal/chrome/cad plating, spray it.

Buy one or trailer the bike to a high speed spray wash. Do not start the engine getting to some car wash or it will cook the oil into the metal surface, meaning. High speed wash the grease out of the bolts and off the rest of the bike first. Use gunk degreaser along with S100 and/or LA's Totally Awesome cleaner, found at a 99 cents store: as the second or 3rd wash. Blow dry, top the tank off and dilute the ATF. Wax bike... Is my 2 cents worth of winter storage left outside.

And this is why this forum is awesome.

Never would have thought about any of those ideas. I've never had to deal with a metric ton of chrome on a scooter either. Not that I'm complaining, lol.

Guess the next day off is chrome day.

Thanks for everybody's input!
