Phatass -- Great video man! This should allow alot more folks to take care of their own adjustments -- saving them some bucks on labor.

Well done

Haven't found a recommended time frame so most usually adjust the pushrods when thier valve train noise becomes excessive, normally around the rocker boxes.

alright...phatass just did this VERY simple adjustment and am totally amazed how quiet the motor is now...i actually heard my own thoughts while riding...well almost the 4 inch karata is pretty loud...any way thanks for the vid...very easy to do just allow the time for lifter bleed down...by the way i went 20 flats...very pleased...thanks again.

"If I may add..."

1. Wear increases gap. When should I reset my lifters? Depends on your oil changes. H-D comes with non-adjust rods. Are you saying they are noisy after thousands of miles, or did the wear bring the valve to open less from wear. That is the question about adjusting.

2. If you spin 3 turns, you'll have the valves opened less than full extension.
a. Intake opens late = Bottom end torque. Loss of O/A performance.
b. Exhaust opens late = You are wasting time feeling for the diminishing return is about diminished you keep the valve closed longer = No top end/mid range is hurt some.

3. Same noise quiets with solid type lifters = A wider [valve lash] gap mean 3 spins, not (4 spins out), will obviously quiet the valve noise; as does with rocker arm adjuster or shim bucket type(s).

4. EOIC:
a. Exhaust Opens ~ Watching this lifter move all the way up = STOP! Or, as soon as the exhaust begins to close, you stop. You stick a block into the brake lever. This drags the crank from moving the lifter back down like you saw on the well presented video.
b. Intake Closes ~ This is the same principal, you watch the intake just begin to close, you need to STOP right there. Do not let it close any more. This is where the lowest point of the heel of the cam is set so you now set the exhaust valve.
c. Learn to say, "EOIC" so you can look at what valve is doing what on the move? "Did my?"

5. Now you can walk up to any OTTO engine and do your thing in the garage.
a. I am going to say, 'flat rate' move.
b. Notice how PHAT went from moving or watching the one pushrod, he moves to the opposite cylinder?
c. This is so universal, EOIC means also, "My valve next to me is now look at the bike as one cylinder. I am still EO-EYE-SEA'inn [it in a ocean] of the same adjustments.

Conclusion:

Q. Do I set my other valve right next to me when I EOIC?
A. Yes. If the engine was a single cylinder, would that not be the same concept of cam heel placement? Then, yes to verify the first yes.

Q. If I can turn the crank twice, can I set all valves in a 'flat rate' move?
A. Yes. That is speedy move or if you grasp the concept.

Q. Then, I could have set my other intake too?
A. Yes you could have.

Q. You mean, I could have turned the crank 2 less times?
A. Yes you can. Now you know what 'flat rate' means.

what about the pushrod seals? should the seals be replaced as well?
if you are talking about the o-rings, you would have to remove the pushrods to do that and that is another whole can of worms. they would only be replaced if they are leaking.

Leaking oil

Thank you for the amazing video but I have a problem. I did the adjustment everything seem to go fine went for a test ride and noticed when I got back I appear to be leaking oil out of my exhaust. Any thoughts please

Nothing in pushrod adjustment would result in oil coming out of your exhaust.

Is the oil coming at the very end of the pipe? 2 into 1 pipe?

It really looked like it was coming out of where the exhaust meets the head and then running down the outer part of the pipe. I will recheck that here in about an hour and post my results. If you guys will please follow my next post I will also move this over to the help wanted section.
