Primary problems.

Alright mornin to all Y’all. My 06 Ridgeback has been leaking from the primary just enough to coat everything with enough oil to make it a dust magnet, turning everything black. I run type F ATF which is what clutch manufacturers recommend. It does allow for a more rigid clutch engagement, zero unwanted slip, smoother shifting, and no trouble finding neutral. A lot of positives to running type F. Only negative is this pesky leak which with some UV dye I was able to pin down to the vent. And before everyone says it’s over full, I put the newer advised 19 oz in it and that is all. Only way to mitigate this other than an open primary is to put an elbow and nipple where the vent goes and put the vent up higher. So the question of the day is … does anyone know what size the threads are on the little vent in the primary. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ride Easy Friend.

How about a catch can or a filter on the breather hose. Although it would probably be better to fix the problem than find a solution.

A catch can setup would not work just because the acting forces required to make it work just don’t exist in the primary. Very good thought though. I will probably find either a 45 or 90 degree street elbow and a 2-3 inch street nipple and put the little vent in it and see how that goes. I did come to the conclusion that the threads are 10-32 and there are adapters to go from that to 1/16NPT so that should be doable. I did drain and refill the primary earlier with 19oz of Royal Purple Max Cycle 20w50. I rode about 20 mile afterwards and it was still dry. So I guess the type F ATF is just so thin it slings so much that it comes right out. Anyway I’ll see how it does on a couple longer rides. If it doesn’t leak with 20w50 then I’ll probably just keep using the 20w50. I’ll have an answer later in the week.

You may want to check your starter for oil migrating into it. The reason for the 19/20 oz recommendation was to help stop starters from getting oil inside and causing failures.
