Primary or Clutch pack going bad

After changing my primary fluid and taking her for a spin I noticed a funny sound coming from the primary. Once she's warmed up and I slow down I here a humming sound it happens when I downshift from 3 to 2 to 1. When I press the clutch in, it goes away, when I let the clutch out, the buzzing sound comes back. Doesn't appear to happen when accelerating only down shifting.

I thinks it's probably my clutch pack needing rebuilt. Had to have the clutch pack rebuilt a few years back by an expert technician :oldbang:. I looked at the wear on the disks when I had the primary cover off and it looked a bit warn for only having about 10k miles. But I really don't know what to look for to identify abnormal wear on a clutch disk. I did see any metal shavings or anything like that. I did not check the technical spec's though. Right now I'm considering doing away with the Baker and moving to open primary. But not the million dollar Baker. Too rich for my blood. Any thoughts would be very helpful.

Thanks, T

What kind of oil did you use? and did you have the primary cover off this time when you changed the oil? If the clutch disc's still have grooves in them you should be good, was the clutch hub nut tight? and was the chain adjusted properly? I know , a lot of questions:willynilly:

The disks had grooves still so should be just fine, checked the hub nut good to go here, chain only had about 1/8 play didn't seem loose at all but I'm just novice.. I used Lucas 75w-140 sync from Curtis..

Also, I didn't take the pack apart to check the basket for wear. Should this be the next step?

Wrong oil in the primary, that 75/140 is for the tranny, I use just regular Harley primary in mine and the chain should have 5/8-7/8" of movement up/down. Your buzz could be because its too tight.

might even have to soak in diesel fuel and then soak in ATF. that gear lube is gonna be hard to clean off without drying out the fibers.

You might have to take the discs out and soak them in ATF. If it's shifting bad after you change that fluid

Transmission oil will make the plates stick

ATF is automatic transmission fluid. Some of us run it in our primaries and I believe it is recommended by the company who supplied the clutches for Big Dog. I would drain the primary.take the cover off and clean all the surfaces the best you can. Adjust you're chain and reassemble the cover. Add a quart of ATF And try it. Good luck.

Tony, you can stick that thing in your trailer and come on down to Suffolk Saturday or Sunday morning and I'll give you a hand putting it back together. You shouldn't be over 3 hrs away.If we can't clean your clutch pack I have a spare out of my 07 K9 that you are more than welcome to have. Your call

You'll do anything to stay outta the garden won't ya? :oldlaugh:

Get all the Trans fluid out of the primary.
Wipe all the plates off. Soak them in ATF while your cleaning everything else out.
Wipe the plates off again, dip them in some clean ATF and put them back in.
Put it back together and run ATF for 500 miles then flush it and put the correct primary chain fluid in.
