It's non-synthetic. Funny thing is last Friday I decided to add another 1/2 qt to my case to match the 1.5 qt capacity stamp. It made things worse. Have to slam into lower gears and much harder to get into neutral. I find this odd. 1 qt seems to work much smoother than 1.5 qts. How would 21 ounces be better? I'd thing less oil would be worse.
You are correct Spectro Primary Chain Case oil is Non-Synthetic. The recommendation to fill the primary with 18 to 20 ounces is for the purpose to prevent oil getting back into the starter. 2005 to 2011 models fill with 18 to 20 ounces in the primary. Models 2004 and earlier use 32 ounces in the primary. You are only lubricating the chain. I would want to know where the metal is coming from when you drain the primary.

I recently tightened the chain to about 1/2" play and cleaned out the case with the cover off. Didn't see anything else weird. Gonna drain out the 1.5 qts when I get home and try 21 ounces of fresh Spectro and reinspect in about 200 miles. Thanks guys!

Talking to my mechanic guy about trying to find and install an open primary. I've been lurking the forums on this. Supposedly they look cool and sound cool, but don't last as long and don't do much else.

I remembered wrong in my previous post..mine was stamped 1.5 quarts as well. Anytime I have a problem or question I come immediately to the forum and post. These guys HAVE NEVER let me down. Yes...I admit I too was a bit skeptical of the 21 Oz advice but I tried it and it's worked great for me. I pulled my whole primary cover off, cleaned it thoroughly and added 21 Oz. The rubber Gaskets are a bit of a pain but patience will get them all in place. Be sure not to stretch the gasket. I think you'll find as I did that shifting and especially neutral will all work better.

I thought it might be possible that the metal you found may be from a problem/repair done by the previous owner if your bike is pre-owned. You need to pull that cover anyway... clean and inspect everything. If it looks OK put it back together and put a little mileage on it and drain the fluid again. You'll know for sure then if you have an existing problem.

When I'm installing the gasket on my primary. I use a product called Gasket Cinch Gasket Sealer item# 440-A. I apply it on the gasket and the track where the gasket goes. It helps hold the gasket in place and when the primary cover is placed back on it prevents leaks. Also, on your next gasket application the Gasket Cinch cleans right up. It's a great product. I also use it on inspection cover. I also, where thin protection on my hands, Latex I think.
