primary chain adjustment

Damn, I feel like such a retard, I can't adjust the primary chain using the BD primary chain adjuster assembly, is there a trick to this? I rode over the weekend and heard some strange noises almost sounded like the chain hitting the primary cover every now and then so I took off the inspection cover and the chain had about 1-1 1/8 inch play at the top middle (5/8" - 7/8" is the tolerance) so I loosened the chain adjuster and the assembly slid down like it should have but now I can't raise it to tighten it because when I put any kind of force below the adjusting nut it tilts and just locks on the assembly instead of sliding up & down. I also thought I would try to put the bike in 5th or 6th gear and rotate the clutch hub to get some tension off the lower part of the chain thinking that maybe the adjuster would slide up easier without the chain weight pressing on the lower shoe of the adjuster assembly but the bike will only go into 1st and nuetral. I had no problem adjusting my friends HD Dyna and this doesn't look much different from that but this damn adjuster will not slide up and to make matters worse now it's even lower than it originally was. I scanned the forum but surprisingly no one posted of having any problems doing this so now I feel  :bang:

You got it almost, just play with it and get the adjuster up to meet the 5/8" requirement. If you can rotate the tire that would help. Once you get the play set then pour in your 16oz of oil and button it up and your good to go.
I just did mine and it was a breeze. The oil coming out was real bad so it enjoyed a good quart of good oil.

ok, thank you for your feedback guys, I will try those suggestions tomorrow, just finished lubing the clutch pushrod because that was also dry and I have no energy or the mindset left to tackle this tonight, besides that gives me something to look forward to tomorrow. :loony: BTW, is the clutch pushrod supposed to have small ridges around the circumfrance in some spots or is it supposed to be perfectly smooth the entire length and more importantly, if it has slight ridges in about 3 or 4 spots will that interfere with it's smooth operation? I assume these ridges are from it rubbing against the various parts of the tranny and clutch assembly.

Mine is smooth and had a lot of grease on it. If your's has ridges then it must have been real dry. Don't think it would cause problems though. It's only a pushrod. I'll bet you have lots better clutch handle pull/feel once you get it lubed up.
When you tackle the primary the drain plug on the bottom will require some plumbers puddy or tape when you put it back in. Clean off the magnet in the end of the plug real good.

Have fun,

Ray

so, I'm thinking a "How-to" on push rod lube is needed. I know I'd appreciate it! Who's got pics?

OK Chris, race is on. I just went over 13,000 today, so I'll probably be doing the 15K service by the end of October.

(Planning a oil drain mod and changing to synth at the same time -- got some driving lights I'm thinking of frenching into the chin airfoil too :D )

Thanks guys, Oscar & Woodbutcher...

Ray.. thanks... I knew you were kiddin bud!

Kickstart... yeah that's ok. I just wish he would have done the 10k. Really I need to get to some more riding... I was really hoping to have 10k in by this winter so I could do it then... but I doubt that is going to happen, especially with my bro's house building coming... that is sure to take out some riding time!

Yep, Life is always full of little and sometimes Big things to take up our time or make us do things that we really rather would not be doing.

That's why it feels so damn good when you do get in the Wind!
