avoid the monkeys banging on your bike and charging you for the privilege.
Monkeys!?!?!?
As a career motorcycle mechanic that comment pisses me off! You want to call someone a monkey Motherf**ker name names. Don't you dare put all of us in the "monkey" catagory!!!

We ain't all monkeys and we certainly don't get to keep all the money that shops charge.

I suppose the wrenches that work on your aircraft are monkeys as well!

Hey mate, why don't you get some tissue and go have a good cry in the corner.

If a dealer sends out a bike to ride that clearly isn't running right, I'd say someone doesn't know jack about tuning a bike (or a simple fix like a defective gas cap), calling them a "monkey" is putting it nicely.

And you know it.

Not taken Black Dogs side but the closest dealer 2 years ago was 2 hours away. Didn't get my bike from them but had them do the service. I instaled a cam and took it to them for a tune. Charged me for 30 minutes (had to leave the bike and go back and get it, 8 hours total). They told me they just had to adjust the push rods. Was skeptical about a 30 minute tune looked and could tell they never pulled the covers on the rods or touched the carb. Didn't say anything loaded up and headed out and worst of all for the owner never went back and gave bad press to my friends.

Luckily for me we now have a dealer in Lynchburg Va. with a top notch crew and I would let them do anything except the shit I want to do (which is most of the stuff). There are good and bad mechanics out there on bikes and with every industry.
It's dedication to what you are doin and morals that seperates the bad from good.

Off the box and back to the bottle:cheers:

Everybody have a good safe weekend :2thumbs:

Hey, I'm didn't say and don't say most mechanics are bad, most are top notch. But it's been my experience it's best to do your own maintenance since no one cares more than you do about your bike.

hey BD, didnt think pilots could backpedal so fast.

from Dogvet's input here i can positively say he's not in the category of mechanic you were referring to.
Not backpedaling, just clarifying what I meant with that remark since I didn't realize some sensitive types would take what I said to the extreme. I'd hate to be responsible for someone chipping a nail on their keyboard while trying to impress me with their big mean words of manliness.

I've been told I need sensitivity training, but I thought it was just for dealing with women.

Carry on.:)

I agree with Black Dawg.....no one will do a better service on your bike than you. You really think a mechanic getting paid 2.5 hours is going to bolt check your bike? Ya right! 90% will do the bare minimum and ship it. It's called flat rate. I was paid by the job for a few years and you do what you are paid to do, and nothing more. If you are capable, do it yourself. If not, I hope you have a great dealer and mechanic like Knotso experienced.

I have said this in the past, and will again, I trust very few ppl, and even fewer to work on my stuff. I do trust the Thomas the V-twin Tech (P8RIOT and RAYWOOD use Thomas also), and will NOT use my local HD dlr even to work on the Harley I bought from them.

It would be a privilage to have a seasoned Professional Mechanic like DOGVET work on my bike. Hell, the man built his own custom motorcycle to boot.

You all are correct though, most Mechanics do not care about the customer as much as the customer cares about his own car.
Most Doctors do not really care about each client.
The carpet salesperson just wants a sale.

Point is, there are a few incredible Mechanics that love to work on our bikes, and go out of their way to help us.

DOGVET is one of these rare ppl. If he was truely after the sale and so on, he would be promoting his shop and going for the almighty greenback.
Dogvet is not doing this, and has done nothing but offer us some of the best assistance on keeping our pups healthy, in his spare time, without asking anything in return.
R&B is a Big Dog dealer who sells dogs without the high markup we are so used to, and offers Tech help also. R&B IS IN business, and we know that up front and yet, they are not aggressivly pushing sales down our throats. The first couple posts were a bit aggressive, but R&B is now in good standing on this site.

Pinkchopper built her own chopper and she is a huge resource and yet is not a mechanic, but that lady cares about us, and these bikes. But she knows more than alot of Techs and more than most of us. Too funny.

Having said that, I also 100% agree that their are a lot of Monkeys (royal assholes) out their grabbing for your money, not keeping promises, keeping our bikes for days and weeks with the premis of "we are working hard to fix your bike", and "the factory is not coming thru for you", when in fact they have over committed to working on too much and not doing anything. Some of these techs are over worked and under trained (ECH prolly frustrates some Techs).

We cannot understand and I will not tolerate a Tech who does not take pride in their work, could care less if I bring my bike to them, and fails to recognize that it costs me $90.00 to bring my pup in the trlr to them each trip.

When I do find a Tech who takes pride, loves their job, respects me, my bike, etc..hell yes, I will go to them.

Yes there are many bad mechanics, some good ones, and only a few great Motorcycle Technicans

And yet, in the pages of these forums, there are some seriously good BDM mechanics that just happen to work in other fields.

Thank You all! :2thumbs:

On the line of the GAS CAP and VACUUM only (not honest hard working mechanics) I do have some interesting experiences…..No expert just a “pup”

Have an ’07 K9 limited edition. Some of you might remember me from the “old site” – rear cylinder running EXTREMLY HOT. Finally got my bike to a dealer and had my 500 mile service done along with some warranty work. (If any of you are wondering yes I was charged $ 600 for the service – no comments PLEASE). The tank was repainted/touched up under warranty. Onto GAS CAP & VACUUM issues….

On the way home sputtered and died…opened the gas cap, heard the air release (vacuum build up) and back on the road, riding along. Taking a closer look at the GAS CAP and PAINT SAVER which were replaced during the warranty work – they are DIFFERENT. I was told by the dealer today that the new (guess ’08) models have different gas caps and paint savers. The paint savers for one are smaller in diameter and DO NOT touch the tank (actually sit at an angle – will try and get a pic posted later on today). Next the gas cap actually covers the paint saver – Look dangerous as one could seriously damage the paint by over tightening the gas cap (I was assured that this would and could not happen as the cap is fitted with a ratchet mechanism, like those found in a car, once tightened it would just spin making a clicking sound – haven’t tried that as of yet). Finally as far as the gas cap breathing – that’s a big NO NO… new so called EPA rules don’t allow that (even in NJ) so all “new” caps will not allow the tank to breath - causing this so called vacuum and not allowing gas to flow into the carb!!!!

Now this is what I see and what I have heard….comments any one – is this “new” stuff true?

I have noticed the same on my 08. The paint saver is smaller and I have seen some that set on an angle. I am careful when tightening the cap because it comes close to the paint. It does have a racheting action at a certain tension. It also has the one way breather valve that caused me vacum problems on my 05.

Thanks V

Correct me guys. Are you talking about venting problems on the fuel injected bikes? Do any of you have a newer car that when you open the gas cap you hear a hiss. Same thing should apply here with your bike. They use a check valve to hold the fuel pressure so the engine will start easier. If I'm right we don't have a vented cap correct?:loony:

My bike has a CARB. Don't get the "check valve...fule pressure" I THINK and believe the NEW cap is NOT vented causing the vacuum. The vacuum in turn does not allow the gas to flow freely into the carb causing the bike to stall.
