Think I used those with the welder to hold the nut and washer. That was when I was making the baffles.

Makes sense, just seeing visegrips on a lift raises red flags for me..like the dudes at the local Harley shop..

You guys crack me up. Take it to the car wash. Spray it with some degreaser and then wash the damn thing. Then go home and polish it up. Don't spray your electrical box or your hand controls or your front fork tube caps...but the motor/tranny/primary/swingarm/shocks/bottom area is fine to wash down. I've been doing that on bikes for 20 years, 10 years + now on my K9. You need to blast all that crap out/off of the motor, not grind it into the cracks trying to wipe it away.

When you get home unscrew the fork caps and blow the water out where it sits on the seals. Blow the hand controls and electrical box/ehc area out too if you want.

There are several threads on it. I have been testing different ways to get it really shinny. Depending on how bad it is, sanding works really well. Start with 1000 grit if it's really bad, then work your way up to 3000 grit. If it's just stained and discolored, use 0000 steal wool, then 3000 grit paper. Then finish it off with mother's billet polish. The secret is, flannel cloth. Get rid of the micro fiber rags, they scratch.
I'll link another post in a minute.

Buffalo Industries (60235) 13" x 24" Flannel Dust Cloth, (Pack of 12) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N2HQQ3I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_kFrmzbKYN1E9G

Just ordered these. Cotton flannel. 12 of them for $15 shipped. Didn't know microfiber scratched till Dent said something about it a few weeks back. Tried an old cotton shirt and sure as heck Mr. Blind You Sparkles was right.

Go to Wallyworld and buy it by the yard, for less than $4.00 a yard. Then cut it up in squares and strips.

Mothers billet works well on aluminum, big fan of it. Any suggestions, tips on how to address the dreaded flaking chrome issues, that some of the dogs are prone to?
Inherent problem about chrome...
Once it's scratched, pitted, or flakes...it's done. You'll have to replace or replate.
Exactly why I prefer billet aluminum where ever possible.
