I do the same thing. I only put the pad on when I know a girl will be riding or I have my T Bag on the bike. I first clean the rear fender really well with auto detailer then wipe off the suction cups. It only take about a minute and I haven't had any scratches on the fender yet (from the pillion pad that is).Everytime I ride, I wipe the fender and the cups witha microfiber towel with some detailer spray and I have never even gotten a single scuff on mine.
It has to be perfectly clean when put on.
It can be rubbed out to look like new again.
