Open Primary

Couple of questions about the open primary. They look sweet, but...

Does the additional weight hanging off center ruin the balance of the RSD?

Are these drives with dry clutches more prone to service problems?

Anyone have a horor story about getting a pant leg in one? (I suppose if you did get it caught it would get spit out of the back side of the front pulley).

I have the Karata Intimidator 3" open primary on my 06 K-9 for about 6 months now - http://www.karata.com/intimidatorbigdog.htm ......

No noticable difference to bike balance - still handles great....

Looks great and has a nice whine to it....

I recently noticed a little clacking from the bearings when bike is in neutral with clutch handle not pulled - pull the clutch handle it goes away - dealer said nothing to worry about but let him know if it gets worse....

Never had a problem with getting jeans caught...I wear straight legs all the time....

hope this helps

The clacking you here is the clutch. The open primaries always make a bit more noise but the karata is one of the quietest on the market. It is bearing noise and I would not worry about it. I had the Karata 4" on my last Ridgeback with the outer bearing support on it. Tore up about 6 pairs of jeans on it. When you jeans get caught in it, it feels like you strapped a tie down strap around your ankle and left about 6 feet dangle. Then went out for a ride and at 50 MPH the tie trap hooks something in the road!!!

Sounds good and with the loss of the rotating mass of the chain, the bike seems to accel a bit quicker.

Like the Karata. Nice and cleen looking. Pricey? How was the install? Is it a do it yourself project?

Thanks, Dawgboy.

Sorry, I do not have too much info to answer your questions.....It was on the bike when I walked into the showroom and the cost was rolled into the final number....probably was a bit pricey, but I am definitely very happy with it.:2thumbs: :D

yes, thats the one. I like the drag race style.
Does it come in chrome? Can you PM me a price polished and in chrome?

Also, if it doesn't come in chrome could I have it chromed?
What is the clutch pull and operation like compared to stock?

No clue on the actual operation, I'm confirming pricing on them now. Looks like they offer only Polished and Machine Finish per my dealer materials. I would guess that you could chrome the outer cover and caps, along with the spacers but wouldn't be able to comment on the operation after the fact.
