That's correctI put my finger on the top of them to check and when I hit the start button I can feel them go down, so I am assuming that means they are working correctly.
Whenever I check the CR's when pushing the start button they do engage. But I don't check them every time. Could it be that the one time I get the clunk and not checking they are not engaging? I have never felt them not engage, hot or cold. If I could hold them down and start the bike at the same time I would do that. They sure seem to be working freely.
X2, do you hold both or just one open? Prior to starting I push them up and down but from the way I understand it, they don't get power until you hit the start. That's why I'm thinking of rewiring them to the battery with a switch to activate then check to make sure their down under power, then hit the start and turn the switch off after its running. What do you think?I have the same issue and I think it's the CR sticking.
I have held the compression release open manually and I haven't had it clunk. So that's why I think it's the CR not staying open or getting stuck and the compression the engine is generating is kicking back through the drivetrain.

Yea I have thought about wiring them to the starter. To activate them through the whole start cycle. Awhile ago an old member MoeSpeeds posted about it quite a few times. It definitely wouldn't hurt.X2, do you hold both or just one open? Prior to starting I push them up and down but from the way I understand it, they don't get power until you hit the start. is the light in the refrigerator really off when the door is closed? That would let you know that there not stuck, but do they really activate when you hit the start button?
