Once in awhile I still get a big clunk from my starter. Is there a problem?

I put my finger on the top of them to check and when I hit the start button I can feel them go down, so I am assuming that means they are working correctly.

Whenever I check the CR's when pushing the start button they do engage. But I don't check them every time. Could it be that the one time I get the clunk and not checking they are not engaging? I have never felt them not engage, hot or cold. If I could hold them down and start the bike at the same time I would do that. They sure seem to be working freely.

Compression releases allow a little bit of air to escape the cylinder during start up to make it easier( less compression) I don't think or see how one not working would make the clunking noise. I had one that the valve on compression release snapped so it was opening and closing consistently and I never had the starter clunk so I'm thinking that is not your problem.

Wire the C/R's to the starter side post. When you press the Starter button, the C/R's will get their charge from the solenoid the exact same time the starter spins the motor.

I have the same issue and I think it's the CR sticking.

I believe the previous owner of my skoot used to wash with soap and water and I'm wondering if water got under the bubble and corrosion/rust started since its really no air.

I have held the compression release open manually and I haven't had it clunk. So that's why I think it's the CR not staying open or getting stuck and the compression the engine is generating is kicking back through the drivetrain.

X2, do you hold both or just one open? Prior to starting I push them up and down but from the way I understand it, they don't get power until you hit the start. That's why I'm thinking of rewiring them to the battery with a switch to activate then check to make sure their down under power, then hit the start and turn the switch off after its running. What do you think?

Yea I have thought about wiring them to the starter. To activate them through the whole start cycle. Awhile ago an old member MoeSpeeds posted about it quite a few times. It definitely wouldn't hurt.

I hold just one down and push start don't have enough hands to do both!

You will feel it trying to pop back up.

But with that said I'll prob rewire it soon to rule it out. The other thing is when the bike is warm it's less likely to clunk but it has and sometimes the head is to Damn hot to stick my finger in there.

I also have tried pushing them up and down a few times to make sure they are not stuck I haven't had as much luck as holding them down. I can feel them engage so I know they are getting power.

Just how are you guys going to wire the CR's direct? It's find the blue wires somewhere and hook them together and attach to the green wire of the started?

I was doing a little reading in the manual last night and according to that the CR's are getting juice at the same time the green wire from the starter is but only for 1 second because of the amps it draws, but I was thinking of a separate switch from the battery to the CR's to turn them on and then off when it starts, this way you could feel them to make sure there down before hitting the start button. What I don't know is, will this screw with the EHC because the blue light on the EHC is for the CR's, what happens if it don't see the draw?
That's my unknown, however if I unplug them and remove the plugs, I could try to see if the motor will spin over without them hooked up.

I don't have an EHC just the PDM installed by a shop via the previous owner. Kinda one reason I haven't gotten around to it yet since I didn't do the BDM need to pull all the wiring diagrams first

But I suspect it works the same and just for 1 second. You should be able to wire to green starter post directly bypassing the EHC completely.
