new guy to bikes and big dogs hell the 2001 husky i have is my first bike ..ever lol what is the difference between the new and old dogs?

99 pitbull won't start

afternoon gentlemen:
got a 99 pitbull i love but having problems. ran great yesterday. tried to start it today and nothing. engine doesn't turn over but battery and connections are all good. any idea/solutions? thanks for any help at all

Do a search on starter issues. There are several common issues. My 2000 Vintage Classic (similar architecture to yours) had starter cut-out problems for the last several years before I replaced the starter. I was always able to push start to get it past the issue temporarily but as the starter aged, it became more and more frequent. When it cut out, I got nothing (although the computer reset and lights worked).

I had at least six mechanics try to diagnose and conclude that the starter was fine and that replacing it was unnecessary. The guys at Jamie's Customs in Big Bend rebuilt my motor for me and while they were t it, took a coil out of the armature spring to strengthen it. That worked for a year but finally the old starter just quit. The new one works great but must always be carful when the compression is built up and let off the starter for a second and retry. It always turns and starts on the second try in that event. Our old Dogs do not have compression release.

More than likely, simple age. Your 2000 should not have any mysterious electronic issues, just simple connection/ground/voltage/charge/ignition issues. Even your control switches (brights/start/blinker) are all old school mechanical/electrical switches - not electronic. The first thing to go on mine (besides the battery of course) was the ignition wires. It took 60,000 miles and a whole lot of wear & tear to produce coil/voltage regulator/stator issues and they all came in waves. Getting past them with simple maintenance and/or replacement sure built my confidence back up for cross-country riding and reliable commuting. Just use common sense.

Check the drain line and petcock for liner debris flaking off because of ethanol in the fuel.

1999 Pitbull here. One of the reasons I joined was to talk to guys like 'DogVet'. I'm 48, been riding all my life. Owned every brand (except Victory). But this is my first BigDog, and I'm gonna need some help.

i hope you don't get disappointed very easily. "dogvet" left the site several years ago of his own accord with no forwarding address.

got lots more members that can answer questions just as well, though.

Nobody has anything older? I've still got my '98 Vintage Classic, it's been through the wringer, but she fires up every spring...it's an old hoss, but reliable! :)

Im a new member and just though I would share this old gem. This picture was in about 2002 or so. Its a 2001 Bigdog Pitbull with 107ci S&S and a few other upgrades. Was crazy fast. Has been long gone since about 2003 but sure was a fun bike.

don't mean to be a downer, but your user name just reminded me of one of the early members here on the forum. "Old Hippy", gone but never forgotten. thank you for bringing the memory back.
