thank you, as I'm having trouble getting the bike to a dealer. Is that

Yes, thats what the (C) stands for.

You can get them about anywhere not just your dealer.

K&N Chrome with end nut for Evo engine - KN171C It's much easier to remove with a socket wrench.
Don't forget to pull the crank sensor before you spin off the filter.

thanks Chris...I live and learn!!!:D
Only 05 and newer have the crank sensor. Earlier modols used the cam instead.

Ray, Can you post the washable oil filter you have on your bike and whewre to buy it?
Here is a link to a group buy that's been done a few times but seems to have dried up. The link to the filter website is there and it lists lots of dealers you can go through. You'll like the filter and one good think is you won't have to remove the crank sensor to remove and clean the filter.

That sorta answers my question as I own a 04....Another difference is the drain plug for the trans is not where Gas' "how to " thread shows either...Would love to find that so I can change the trans fluid too...I have looked everwhere and still no drain plug!!!!

BBD... just noticed you put up 171... that is NOT the correct filter. That is the twin cam filter.

Evolution style V-twin engines on BDM -

OK - Just got off the phone with both S&S Cycle and K&N filter companies technical staff.

K&N says the only difference between the KN170-C and the KN171-C is that the KN170 type has NO anti-drainback valve in it. The filter elements are about 20 micron in both and claim High-flow. Both have a welded on removal nut for easy removal.

S&S says they recommend using either a Harley EVO filter or a S&S EVO filter, both having 30 micron elements in them for better flow rate. The P/N's for the S&S chrome oil filter is 31-4102 (no drainback valve) or for a HD filter is 63796-77A.

S&S said that if you run anything less than a 25 micron filter element the oil return path through the filter can become restricted due to element clogging and will cause a build-up of oil in the sump that can puke out the breather hose. The EVO style engines run a lower oil pump pressure. They also said an anti-drainback valve is NOT REQUIRED.

So there you go!

KN170 or KN171 (C=chrome) KN170 would be a good choice as well.

Like I tell my engineers - Without data, your're just another opinion.

Hope this clears up all the "What filter do I use" mystery.

My dealer in San Diego only carried the 171 and installed them in all the bikes during survice and I also used them for years before going to the K&P without problems.

Hey I'm just saying that the 171 is for the twin cam with the anti-drain back. This subject was beat to death MANY MANY times.
