Noisy fuel pump

Hey folks. so i bought my 2010 mastiff 4 years ago. When I got it, I was concerned that i could hear the fuel pump whining in the tank....especially when the fuel was lower than 1/2 tank. I ordered a new one from BigDog and installed it. The new one makes the same goddam whining noise. Now, I just got it out from winter storage and it seems louder than ever. Is this something anyone else that runs EFI has going on? I asked BigDog and they didnt seem concerned, but I dont wanna get stuck out on the road. Day before yesterday, I was pulling into the driveway after a short scoot and my next door neighbor asked what the noise was. Seems odd to me.

Its normal to hear the pump, but it should be consistent. Maybe make a video and share.

When you changed the pump how was your filter and tank liner? They are notorious for breaking down and plugging the filter and pump, even injectors.

My Bagger, when I first turn the key on, makes some kind of noise also. Not sure if it's the pump or the injector. Been like that for 2 years now. Never had a problem.

So a friend of mine bought a new wolf when big dog was going out of business when he got it, it only had a few miles on it and the fuel pump you could hear but was not terrible but did get noticeably worse in a short period of time. after a little riding started having power issues ended up being the liner in the tank coming apart and when it blocked the fuel inside the tank the pump would get noisier and noisier. we did clean the tank out and ended up replacing the pump the noise quiet it down some even though you could still hear it but as the pump liner fell apart more the noise got louder again, after cleaning out a little better the second time as far as I know it's been fine still some noise

One of the old ones.
It’s normal for the fuel pump to ‘power up’ when you hit the run switch. It requires around 60psi to operate the bike, so the pump runs for several seconds to build up pressure for starting the engine. I never noticed any noise from my Bagger’s fuel pump when it was running, tho—but I am pretty hearing impaired when riding too.
There is a Schrader valve (like on your tires) under the tank by the fuel pump you can use to check the pressure.

Low fuel kind of causes the empty tank to act like a bullhorn.
Low fuel shortens the fuel pump life [heat] not being submerged and cooled, plus gets quiet some with more fuel.
Low fuel pressure is going to make a bike/car not start.

With that said:
We keep the tank topped off more or less or go thru pumps with low levels in the tank, cough, car too.
We put up with the pump noise as long as it makes/holds pressure.
We don't seem to have a problem because the bike starts and that says 60psi when it auto shuts off before starting.

Louder than ever? 4 years ago I've been pressured buy this noise that came extra with the bike 15 yr old bike?
Mind you, the new, louder pump is still starting the bike after storage, yes?

Or say it wasn't the cream to tank separation on the pump swap. Same noise, yes? I think it might be one of those NASCAR last few laps, the ear zones in on the mechanical noise for the DNF that never comes. It is just humming along with zero problems.

Troubleshoot FI:
All that you can think of gas wise is good to go but no start = Low fuel pump pressure.
Hard starts, longer pump noise than normal, runs sustained but falls on its face at WOT = Low fuel pump pressure.
Consistent habit of running low gas levels in tank and heating up the pump's coil windings to spin a motor; and comes that one day you turn the fob = No noise building up pressure.

But if it starts, runs, no problem at WOT, why sherader?

It starts n runs ok, even @ WOT. Your pump is noisy when you get below half a tank. Solution: keep ur tank full.
My .02, if ya dont have a gas gauge you can see, you have one you can hear. Ride safe.
