noise down shifting

I have a 07 K9 and when I have the clutch lever pulled in and down shift I get this howling or growling noise. I replaced the throw out bearing which was bad but I still have the noise on downshifting. If I kill the engine my friends can hear it standing 30 plus feet away. I put a stick to the tranny, primary, and motor to see where the noise is the loudest and its loudest at the rear of the primary where the clutch basket is. I've done some searching on here and have looked and different things but I was hoping someone could give me an idea where to go from here. Thanks.....David:flag:

try pulling the clutch rod to see if it is scored up. if not, it may just need a good smearing of grease. if scored up, need to replace.

A few things come to my mind so I suggest checking ....
1) Clutch push rod,make shure that it has some lube on the end.
2) Clutch may be worn with warped clutch disks.
3) Clutch basket (carrier) could be broken.
4) Worse case the bearings in the trans are shot and the trans needs a rebuild.
5) The chain guide could be worn and needs to be replaced.

Leaning towards Woodbutcher thinking. The clutch rod has a harden end on them and if the throw out bearing was bad, may have burned the clutch rod end per say. Make sure it is greased well, but inspect it to see if it has signs of like it was overheated or distorted also at the ball end. May need to replace.

I pulled the push rod and its scored pretty bad. I got a new one coming. My question is whats causing it??? And whats the best type of grease to put on the new one??? :cheers:

HIGH TEMP Grease is the Best lubricant for that rod unit.

Bad Throwout bearing...?
(Replace it with a New BAKER UNIT)
Check your clutch basket,the grooves the plates RIDE In and the condition of all involved(plates,discs and basket itself).
Is yer Transmission bearings and trap door leaking or is there a significant decrease in clutch lever *FEEL* after gettin on that bike-or launching Hard & Fast...?(I hate the word "Tranny")

Whats yer Primary Drivechain tension set at and is there wear or other *issues* inside the primary that you've noticed...?
Gotta look at ALL these scenarios and issues Brudda.....one or a few can cause what you are asking about.

Damn man you sure know your shit. I replaced the throw out bearing and some of the noise went away. I see what your saying about multiple issues causing the noise. My next step is to get a new push rod adjust the clutch and see how it sounds. Then go from there. What you think???

some of the push rods were fractionally over-sized so it may not be anything you are doing or not doing, it may have just been going to happen. lube it up well and then go riding after you re-adjust the clutch. make sure the balls in the ramp stay where they are supposed to be.

Well I greased the push rod and while I was at it I drained the tranny oil. The bike has always been serviced by a local BD dealer. Anyway I drained about half of what the tranny normally holds and it look like it has alot of metal in it. Refilled tranny, adjusted cluth and test drove. Same noise!! I think its going to be something in the tranny. What say ya'll??? Thanks...David:bang:

I've read through all the posts and I'm left wondering when exactly do you hear the noise?

A) When you pull the clutch in prior to downshifting without actually shifting to a lower gear?


B) Only when you downshift after clutch is pulled in?

So my thinking is you need to isolate when you actually hear the noise. If it is the clutch one would think it would make the noise regardless of upshifting or downshifting and only heard when the clutch is disengaged.

also, when you say you "refilled" the tranny, just how much did you put in there???? transmission is only supposed to have (20) oz. of fluid in it!!!!!

I would at this point take off the inspection cover on the top of the trans and inspect the shift forks,drum,and gears. If you dont see any signs of abnormal wear then the metal you saw in the fluid you drained out of the trans is from the bearings. Another DSSC bearing failure. :/ It will need to be rebuilt.

Call me if you need help. 704-989-2294 I give a 1 year warrenty if needs to be rebuilt.

Might be time to pull the top cover of the transmission (Note to Vince: I didn't use "tranny") if you've looked at everything that Vince suggested.

I think I have the same problem. Started last week:bang: Here is a video of it. My neighbor probally thought I was pretty conceited when I set the camera up, lol. Also. I noticed about the same time that it was harder to downshift into 2nd or 1st gear...like the clutch wasn't fully disengaged and the shifter would try to kick back.

Is the engine sprocket nut tight?? If so clutch hub nut??? Or the clutch basket is broken. If none of that is there any play in the main shaft ....in my mind that would be the main targets...

Spoket nut is tight, clutch hub nut tight, no play in main shaft, clutch pushrod looks good, throw-out-bearing good. Haven't pulled the clutch basket off yet, that was my next step. Did notice that my tensioner shoe had grooves about an 1/8 in deep.

I was just in there..was walkin on me and makin a little noise... for me it was the sprocket nut loose...still walkin alittle thinkin maybe got a warped plate...so gonna take it apart again...good luck hope its somethin simple
