Noise and vibration when starting

2005 Chopper - lately when starting I am getting a kind of whine. Now that whine includes a vibration. It starts but does not sound good doing it. Ideas appreciated.

make sure your starter hasn't worked it's way loose. should be, i think, 2 screws that hold it to the inner primary housing. but, there might also be 1 from the inside of the housing.

I checked the bolts I could access. the motor mounts were good. Getting to the starter bolts requires removing the final drive pulley case. The one I could get too seemed tight. I am in the process of charging the battery with trickle charger but the battery seems strong. I probably won't pull the primary cover and will wait for Curtis to get back and let him sort it out.

Thats no a whine - thats a grind - does this only happen when starter is engaged (button pushed?)
If so- I would look at
Starter shaft loose? hitting housing?

Starter itself -does it do it if on bench?

If not the starter then it might be the clutch hub nut or clutch bearing - allowing the basket to grind on primary housing??

Just some on my thoughts - but these are based on the noise only occurring when the start button pressed/started engaged

I actually think what I would do - and everyone has own opinions

I would take off the primary cover and hit starter and see if you see anything (maybe removing plug wires/plugs so bike doesn't start??

I would then remove the starter shaft and see if the whine is gone
- if it is not - then you know its internal to starter

-If whine is gone with shaft remove then you know the shaft is either hitting something or its the clutch hub nut or bearing allowing the clutch basket to rub - which should be more obvious where noise is coming from at this point anyway.

Even if hub nut is loose - you may want to consider changing the bearing and cleaning up the drag marks in the primary housing.

But other opinions on my opinion are welcomed

You will sling oil all over the place unless you somehow cover it...ask me how I know. Second thought, dont! ha

On your second point of removing the shaft how you gonna do that an start bike? LOL

Regardless I am with you, not sure its necessary the start.

Thanks for the great advice. But I am over my head. i will get it to Curtis and let him sort it out. I will report back his findings.

Yes, it slung oil all over. Even after I dried the bottom of the primary. However the whine was gone. So, I need to find out if the primary case was already like this from previous breakage or if this is new. I suspect it is new wear. If so, and everything seems tight, why would the clutch assembly have moved forward. I did not find any metal shavings in the primary. The clutch seems to still work, at least it moves in and out. Also the bolts done seem worn.

There is a shim kit I believe that prevents this if it happens I'll post the part number for you if I find it in my paperwork
I am confused. If this is a new condition then something moved. How is a shim going to help? I am asking not questioning the recommendation. Thanks

The primary chain does not move when I pull in clutch. The clutch assembly seems very tight. I don't have the tool to remove the spring clamp on the outer bearing to get to the clutch nut.

If you remove primary cover and the whine stopped, then the only thing in the stater that could be an issue is broken shaft - or loose, or something that is hitting the primary cover???
I'd look at the stater shaft - if not it must be the clutch hub nut or bearing - these are the only pieces that move inside there (that i can really think would cause the noise)- possible starter shaft hit primary cover - or it pushes the clutch basket gear and torques it into the primary cover or even side loads it into the rear primary cover. but to if its the clutch basket moving the nut must be loose or the bearing is bad.

Either way, my opinion is, if its not the starter shaft broken or hitting primary cover, get a new clutch hub bearing and then as you replace it and torque the clutch hub nut you will have eliminated both possibilities.

Having done nothing more than removing the primary cover and replacing the rubber gasket and inspection gasket and torquing everything up to WSW specs(thicker gaskets) the noise is gone. Bike started up and ran fine. Now I get to nervously wait for it to happen again or something fail completely.
