No where to turn! Sick dog

I am so confused! Haven't been able to ride that much in the past 10 months.
Sister diagnosed stage 4 lung cancer. So stayed with her as much as possible.
Her suffering ended last month with her passing. So anyway have only been able to get in about a 1000 miles this year. But a problem I have had on and off for over a year has to be resolved. While riding, could be 60 miles or like today over a hundred miles. While riding, bike will just shut down. If I just hit the run button while this is happening it sputters for a split second and can go another 100 miles or 50 or whatever. I have followed everyone's advice. Dielectric grease on every possible connection. New key switch, new battery, new crimps on every wire I can get to. As far as fault lights here we go. Turn key on and hit run, red lights comes on, hit start and off i go. She can run sometimes all day with no problems. Well today after about 90 miles happened again. Pulled over pulled the seat and sure enough no red light. Hit run red light comes on hit start and I go. Not a venting issue with gas cap, run with it loose or tight. Same thing happens. Since it is not a fuel issue, has to be electrical,I guess. I am just tired of this , and never knowing when it's going to happen. I love riding her, and it's sort of nice to be back out there. I live on long island,NY. I would be more than happy to take it to a shop, if anybody knows of one here on the island. But I always turn to the forum first. Any help would be appreciated. Even if it's a referral to someone that knows more than me,which shouldnt be that hard because I am not a mechanic, just trying. Sorry post is so long but don't know where else to turn. Thanks in advance. David

Sorry to hear of your sisters passing.
Your symptoms are fairly common among some bikes and finding solutions should be easy to find using the search function. Sounds like youv'e covered some already.

If you're running an EHC I can tell you what the problem is. For the first 2 years I had my bike it was one crazy electrical thing after another. The electronics on these bikes were designed by people who had worked for Lucas in England and were fired from there. No thought went into the electronics on these bikes. An EHC has no place on a vibrating piece of machinery. I had my bike re-wired and have not had one problem in the last 8 years. Prior to that I had one electrical problem or another almost every other time I took the bike out.

First, what year is the bike?

Second, are the electronics all stock as in no extra LEDs, HID, etc.?

Have you looked at the right control circuit board?
I have followed everyone's advice. Dielectric grease on every possible connection.
While that's good thing it's not a fix, it's a preventative measure.
New key switch, new battery, new crimps on every wire I can get to.
That helps to rule out a couple of things...
Turn key on and hit run, red lights comes on, hit start and off i go... after about 90 miles... Pulled over pulled the seat and sure enough no red light. Hit run red light comes on hit start and I go.
Which red light are we talking about? Most years have numerous red lights on the EHC and one on the ignition module so you need to narrow it down...
Not a venting issue with gas cap, run with it loose or tight.
Again, good to rule out more stuff!
Since it is not a fuel issue, has to be electrical,I guess.
Sounds logical!

Unless you're a "jump into the deep end of the pool" kind of guy with money to burn I wouldn't worry about rewiring the bike just yet. It's at best arbitrary to assume the EHC is bad until you've done a little troubleshooting!

Bottom line, if troubleshooting is what you're interested in there's a number of us on this forum willing to help. And if arbitrarily changing parts until you accidentally get the right one is what you want to do, we're here for that too!

The best of both worlds!

Im sorry 2006 chopper, red light on ehc is the only light that ever lit up. Once i hit run.Red light on control module lit . And no I do not have an unlimited cash supply. So what now. Of course willing to replace parts that I feel comfortable doing. I am losing voltage to ehc I guess..?

Does your EHC look like this?...

And if it does, which red LED is on? Ignition? Or something else?

You're talking about the EHC, not the ignition module right?
So what now.
Another question, of course! When the bike dies are the all the light still on?
Of course willing to replace parts that I feel comfortable doing.
I should also ask, how are you with a multimeter?
I am losing voltage to ehc I guess..?
It sounds more like you're losing a ground from the ignition switch in which case all the lights would also go out. Or, the right control board is supplying a ground to shut off the engine which in this case the lights would stay on.

So what's it doing?

If it looks like 6 lbs. of shit packed in a 5 lb. bag with 14 or more LEDs you can see, you have an EHC. On the other hand, if it looks like 11 lbs. of shit packed in a 4 lb. bag with a handful of LEDs that you may or may not be able to see, it's a WirePlus.

Or post a pic of what's under your seat... :D

Don't know about the '06's, but my '04 had a similar issue and it turned out to be the ignition switch in the nose cone. I'm sure someone else with experience on your year can chime in if this could be part of the problem. Also sorry about your sister.

Now that right there is some funny shit!!

It sounds like your symptoms mimick what would happen if you hit the Run/Stop button while riding. Short, bad right control board, etc... Seems like everyones got you covered, you'll figure it out.
