Go actual mileage, the original owner of my bike changed the speedo and left it at zero, I will prolly send it in one of these days...I procrastinate a lot though..
I'm with ya there...my k9 the owner did the same thing. Has nothing to do with resale really just when I see my odometer in the k9 I know I need to add 3400 miles.

Some maintenance items it's just easier to know the true mileage. For example recommendation from S&S is to replace lifters every 20-25k

Yeah, set it. The 06 Mastiff I just bought has one and the guy didn't set it so it's pretty confusing to try and remember how many miles are on the bike for service stuff. Plus if you ever sell it OR move to another state and they do a VIN inspection and the mileage isn't accurate you'll forever have a branded title saying "true mileage unknown or in excess of mechanical limits" which is certainly something that'll kill resale value.

I know all states are not the same but actually Texas doesn't track mileage over 10 years on vehicles. I think they figure at that point well you are on your own to make an informed decision on what you are buying. Not to mention on an MC it's not hard to swap out speedos. I know I wouldn't trust many at this point as most of these bikes are 10+ years old at this point.

I like the law..makes buying and selling old vehicles a lot easier.

If you look at a bike that has a DD on it and the owner says it was set with the original miles when he installed it, you still don't know if that is the truth. If the seller has the old speedo maybe that might help. It's hard to believe folks you don't know especially sellers. Just my .02

I had the guy at the DMV wanting further documentation (service records) when I bought my slammer, he didn't believe it had 54 miles on it cause it was four years old, from date of manufacture. They ended up calling the original owner to get info from before issuing my title.

That's true Pat, but how would you show the old mileage on the OEM speedo if it died? That's why I replaced mine, however if you are the seller and a buyer comes to look at it, you get a good feel for that person by the surroundings he keeps, there are some very dishonest people out there though. I've had people buy my vehicles in the past without even driving them, even the Viper I just sold, he wanted to take it for a ride and I told him a joy ride will cost him $1000, non refundable if you don't buy it, but I will apply it to the purchase price. Money in the bank and title transferred even before he got behind the wheel with the key.
Way too many of these cars have been wrecked on a test drive.
