well had a little problen had the bike running shop, after it was off I was wiping down some dust on the paint then droped the micro fiber rag it landed on pipe heat shield for a split second, before I snatched it off, left a small spot that looks like tiny dots on the shield, it was the fibers melting, I've tried most everything to get it off, got about 90% off any one got any ideas, oh it was on the road king

Go to the auto parts store and get yourself some steel wool. Alot of people don't realize that steel wool comes in different grades. I use the #00 very fine and it does not scratch you chrome. I ran a detail shop for a number of years and detailed hundreds of bikes and this works everytime. Just use the steel wool and a small amount of polish (to lubricate) and it will remove everything from surface rust to burnt on boot rubber. It will work on everything that is chrome.

First-use 0000 steel wool (home depot has it)and do a test spot(like underneith) to assure it doesn't scratch the chrome.WAY BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY! you might try laquer thinner first,I've had good experience with it as well.Good Luck!

Had a similar incident happen on my Harley awhile back and got this advice, which worked...

Get a can of 3M "General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner" (p/n 051135-08987). With the pipes warm but not hot, spray the area, let it soak a minute, then try wiping it off with a clean cotton terry cloth towel. Repeat as needed.

Chrome will "hairline" scratch easy, so I avoid all "paste" type metal polishes...one little chunk of something in the paste will scratch your chrome!

Not sure about the steel wool thing mentioned earlier (never tried it), but it sounds like the dude knows what he's talking about. If my method doesn't work, you may want to give steel wool a try. Let us know how it goes.

There's no way I'd use steel wool of any grade considering you can scratch chrome with pressure from a soft rag!!

Oven cleaner is what you need!!!

Quick story... Many moons ago I was on a long ride. As soon as I parked the bike and shut it down the wind blew a plastic bag up against the pipes. There was melted plastic on about a two foot section of pipe and the cooler the bike got the harder the shit was. I tried everything mentioned in this thread and only got some of it off but also got many small scratches. After thinking about it I decided to try oven cleaner since it's made to loosen up burnt on stuff... Worked like a champ! The melted plastic peeled right off!!! And because there was no rubbing involved it left no scratches. I wished I'd have thought of it in the first place because now I had this nice smooth shiny area surrounded by very fine small scratches from the other stuff I had tried. :(

I wish I had more money.
You can get the pipes hot and then use a wet rag or towel to get it off. I had pipes that my boots were bad on. Ran the bike and got the pipes hot and a wet cloth and it came right off.

i used 0000 steel wool on my exhaust to clean shit off of it but it left some fine scratches up close you couldn't see it but away you could see it seemed like it discolored it :bang:

Using a COTTON cloth, heat the pipes back up, and using some laqueur thinner just wipe the stuff right off.

It has to be hot again to get it off. I'd NEVER use any grade of steel wool on chrome. Metel on metal is a no no.

Even if you don't see scratches in the chrome after using #0000 steel wool, I assure you that a year or two down the raod the chrome in that spot will show thin and start to haze up and pit.

Even chrome polish with no abrasives in it will thin out the chrome plating. ONLY use a high quality wax to polish chrome and thinner or gas to remove stuck on S*it!!

Just my .02 cents!

Use a razor blade, bend the blade to the shape of the pipe. Keep the blade on an angle it should come right off. I had a warm up suit on the other day and was showing my son our new Mastiff with short pipes.
It took about four inches of the pant leg and baked it on the chrome. I took a single edge blade bent to the shape of the pipes and it came right off and did not scratch at all. Make sure to keep the blade angled so it doesnt dig in

Oven cleaner sounds the best to me i have a small rubber spot on my bobbers pipes.I'm going into town later to get some and try it out....

Get the Pipes hot, WD-40 and a Cotton Cloth.......Spray the WD-40 on the Cloth, wipe the area, Repeat as needed. Once the pipe is cool, Chrome Polish. The WD-40 will Disapate from the heat.
