Need help with air cleaner

I changed the air cleaner on my 2008 Big Dog Mastiff to a bullit shaped/cone shape air cleaner purchased from Big Dog Parts King. I have had it to 4 different custom shops and no one can get it right. They have changed the jets, adjusted carburetor, even took it to Dyno trailer at rally and they couldn't get it right. Anyone know what else to do? I am located in Myrtle Beach, SC. I would welcome anyone to call me and give me any suggestions. Really appreciate any help!

what is the bike doing? how is it running? what size jets? has the air bleed jet been changed? flat nosed air cleaner or pointed?

I had trouble with mine when I first put it on back in 07. I would rejet and get it right and then the weather would change and I would get the stumble again. Always around the 65mph mark, right when the intermediate jet would hit. I turned the cone straight up and haven't had a problem since. Now let me post a Disclaimer now and get it out of the way: I am no expert and this is what I did. There is a lot of other's on this site that are better at carbs than me. Hopefully they will chime in.

I am assuming your having trouble with the stumble at 65mph. It has been a common problem with the D&M air filter. If thats not your problem then forget about my post, and tell us more about what its doing.

maybe you can contact John at Xterme Customs in Mauldin SC. also, I agree about the air cleaner. the pointed cones facing forward seem like they don't allow enough air to get into the carb. I would recommend a #33 intermediate jet, #76 main jet, # 60 air bleed jet. depending on the exhaust. if you are running Big Radius exhaust with no baffle I would got with what I recommended above.

I'm not a carb expert either but I've read enough to say most who went with a spiked air cleaner found the best success pointing them upward. Try searching the forum also.

every bike that I've worked on that had the spike air cleaner had issues. they look cool, but don't preform well.

It is spitting and sputtering, back firing. Not sure what size jets this shop put in it and assume the air bleed jet has been changed. I don't live here full time so it has become difficult to stay on top of the issues. I haven't talked to the guy at this shop since they are closed until Tuesday and someone brought the bike home for me. Pointed air cleaner. If you know what size jets are supposed to be in it I will ask on Tuesday when I take I back over there. I am to the point of putting the factory air cleaner back on it. The bike was running perfect before I changed the air cleaner and only has 1200 miles on it.

Thanks - I have read several posts stating they had to point it up but I really don't like the look. If I have to do that, I will just try to find someone to put back to factory.

Thanks. It appears I will have to go back to the factory setup..Now to find someone capable of doing that!

too bad you weren't here in Kansas, I could help you out! I was a factory Tech (mechanic) in Wichita. I was at the Rally at Myrtle Beach in 07 or 08 with Jason Rogers. we were doing warranty work. it was a great time. I would love to be still working at Big Dog.

factory jets in that carb were. #74 main. #.295 intermediate #40 air bleed. if it has aftermarket pipes, we at the factory would install a #31 inter jet & a #76 main. usually the 74 main works fine. this is with the stock air cleaner assembly

I just went through this I took it to two shops and nobody could get it running right I have been toying with the thing for weeks I finally got it squared away for the most part. It takes time and a lot of tinkering. Read the plugs. What did they say about how it is running?

Did you removed the auxiliary bowl vent? That causes the issue you described if it's left in
X2 ... That is a MUST with the spike. It will make all the difference, especially if the mounting bracket is blocking the front facing air way passage.

I put the same spike from BD PartsKingpin on my bike. Installed, test rode and had the same problem over a certain RPM. Should need nothing more than the bowl vent removed as indicated in the S&S tuning guide. After doing so....ran just like it did right before install.
BTW...I'm pointed forward.
