Myrtle Beach ride on my 07 K9

Well just got back from Myrtle yesterday and decided I would give a round up of my experience on my 07 K9. We left Northern Jersey Sunday morning 7:00 am. We ended up wearing full leathers and heavy clothes because it was like 50 degrees when we left and the wind was terrible. We took the Cape May Ferry through the Chesapeake Bay bridge where it was raining and the wind was blowing us sideways the whole way to Virginia where we ended up stopping due to the tornado warnings and golf ball size hail they were reporting. Bike got a total drenching during which time we were trapped in a local bar. They did give me a plastic bag to cover my spike aircleaner with though. Two problems arose one my neutral light wouldnt go out until she dried out second was I couldnt downshift without using my foot to lift up slightly on my shift lever. Tried flushing the linkages and heim joints with wd 40 then dry slide to no avail. Problem turned out to be the original shitty heim joints which were promptly replaced by Brad at the Big Dog trailer in North Myrtle. During the next days ride we decided we would travel the outer banks of North Carolina where we continued to deal with horrible winds and much cooler than normal weather. We took the ferry to Hatteras where much to our dismay we ended up riding through salt water flooded roadways at one point and damn near sand storms due the wind everywhere else. We ended or second day early because we were stranded on the middle island when the coast guard cut off ferry service due to the winds. At least we were able to get a hose at the hotel and rinse the saltwater off the bikes. Got shitted because we were stranded and got up early for the first ferry off the island at 7:00 to make the final trip into Myrtle beach where I lost a screw for one of my new switchblade pegs and had to wire it up to keep it from dragging. We had a great time in Myrtle and had much better than expected weather all week. We left Saturday morning at 6:00 am and started our ride home in much better weather than when we left and ended up riding the whole 700 miles in one shot with a break to take the ferry from Delaware into Cape May NJ. Once in NJ I again lost the same bolt in the same footpeg (Kuryakyn gave me a new one in Myrtle) and we finished our trip 8:00 Saturday night where we went promptly to the local bar and got shitted for a ride well done. 1400 Miles roundtrip (Know this is nothing for you Ray) and I give the dog an A+ for how she handled during the whole trip. With the exception of the heim joint trouble she never complained or barked while doing a steady 75-85 mph whenever possible. I would like to recommend a product that literally saved my ass from my gel seat and it is the Roho Airhawk seat pad. You strap it to your seat after slightly filling the rubber bladders with air and the miles just flew by. Never thought I would be able to do 700 miles in one day on the chopper but this setup proved me wrong and I could easily have done another couple of hundred miles if necessary. Overall lots of boozing and riding and I cant wait to do it again. Out of the four of us who went I was the only BD rider two rode softail customs and one rode a new dresser but I sure saw a lot of them down there so it appears we were well represnted as a group.

Got the medium sized one which seems to fit it pretty good they dont make one specifically for the dog but it was the size they recommended. Not cheap but well worth it in my asses opinion :2thumbs: no numbness after 12 hours in the saddle overall that day.

emmclary,

Excellent report and sounds like a memorable ride that will always bring back some smiles. Of course as the time flys, the hail will become size of boulders, the Tornados F5 and you caught in the middle, and the Hatteras ferry will become Perfect Storm weather and you hi-jacked it to get out of there. All depends on the age and the liquid memory aids to see how big it becomes.

Very good to hear that the Dog held up well overall and only minor issues with noe stopping you or for that matter could occur on any ride in the weather you rode in. Also good to hear that BDM is providing the personal assistance at the big shows and doing everything they can to remain the customer focused company thay have become, that should be around for many years.

Now lets see some pictures.

Shit one of my buddies already is talking that way about the trip. I can honestly say it was one of the hardest rides I have ever been on overall for the trip down fortunately all four of us are experienced riders. We were supposed to have two newbies with us but fortunately they backed out. We were wiped just from fighting all the wind I was literally leaning the bike over to go straight over the Bay bridge tunnel. I was also glad we didnt get the hail some of the nearby areas got because it would have fd up our bikes royally.

emmclary,

Yea the high cross winds can be a real bear. Had a ride years ago coming over the 7 mile bridge down in the Keys and the weather was pretty bad, probably like you, had the sucker in a constant off lean as my pucker factor was up the whole way.

Can not even imagine getting out on the Chesapeak Bay Bridge-Tunnel coming from the Eastern Shore and getting stuck in such. That is a long ass ride over that bay and no where to really go if you get in trouble or want a break. Salute to you and your buds.

I will check out the Roho Airhawk. For trips I am thinking about a 12' sissy and a touring bag, along w/ a BDM windshield. Did you have all this stuff for your 1400 miles? Any suggestions?

JerryC,

A windshield. Brave man my friend. Do what you feel is best but be prepared for all the hazing on a windshield.

I have the 12" sissy bar which I had to make an adapter for to make my bag fit it since it is so narrow. Windshield? who needs a stinkin windshield. I did turn my bag around and rest it on the passenger pillion to use as a backrest which makes a huge difference in comfort and trying to hold yourself up against the wind at 75+ mph.

I gotta hand it to you guys who ride. I saw 4 guys Sunday night on 95 in a killer rainstorm, just doesn't look like fun to me. Every time I thought about riding down next year, I turned to my girl and asked her for some road head.
