What a tangled web you've weaved:roll:

As mentioned Idle should be 1000-1050 RPM. To low (around 900 and speedo will look like a christmas tree). Also to low will be low oil pressure.

Threaded part, next to the trans?
Sounds like your radiator cap.
Now that you've hammered it back on, how are you going to flush your coolant?

Just beat the carb with a hammer until it starts to idle down, this method worked for you already, should work again.

Was this particular part next to the muffler bearing. If so, this part is indeed part of of the tranny. What you need to do is stop over at any local auto parts store and ask the guy for a can of transmission putty. Get the purple putty, it's stronger than the orange type. plus it looks better. Go home take the same hammer and beat the part back off and apply and heavy coat of the purple putty behind the cap and take the same hammer and beat it back on. This putty will stop the air from mixing with the oil and causing the transmission to shift on it's own. Good luck.
Best post I have ever seen on this site!!

First, I don't know what year it is... but I think you're talking about your clutch adjustment
if its older than it will look similar to this

Then the adjustment is on the primary side

If its a newer dog it will look like this

And adjusts under that cover

Either way this will tell you how it works....
http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/how/2025-how-adjust-your-clutch.html
HOWEVER, with opening posts like your first and using of the hammer... you may just want to put down the hammer and wrench, start using your PC mouse more to read around here.

Secondly, read this on your carb problem...
