LUGGIN YOUR MOTOR IS REAL BAD

hey guys, this is posted in S&S site and want to share with ya....

S&S Cycle, Inc.:
Luggin your motor does more damage than you think. Riding below 2,800rpm is lugging, in any gear at anytime. Just because you have a 6th gear, does not mean you need to use it. Be a wise rider, shift when you need to, don't be lazy.

Q:
What would you consider a too high constant RPM?

S&S Cycle, Inc. :
Too high? that would depend on your motor design over all.I'd like to see 6250 once in a while, but i don't stay there. Constant, ride all day at 2,800/3,500 long live the motor. you could ride at 4,000 i guess but that might shake things apart on your bike, but not hurt the motor, as much as lugging it would.

Interesting. I would have thought that to be much lower RPM for lugging. My motor (X-Wedge) does not seem to be lugging even around 2000rpm.

I thought the same.... but I remember a guy in the S&S stand in Sturgis asking this, so I think they put it there considering it is a regular thought.

like I said in another thread V-twins are notoriously easy to lug and v-twin riders are notorious for luggin them. I always like to have my 3k light lit

I run between 2000 and 4000 all the time. Guess it depends on the load at low rpm, I wouldn't climb a steep grade at 2000rpm but could go down a hill lower then 2000.

2000 rpm for me too. I thought it cruised good in that range. I guess I need to get out of that diesel frame of mind. Hey "Diesel frame of mind" sounds like a country song. I'm invoking implied copyright. That will be a hit if I can get someone to write it. I can't stomach country music. "insert puking smiley here"

Where does it say 3,000 rpms is the "hard deck" in the owner's manual??
I've always heard "nothing below 2,000 rpms" :nono: (except when you idle or first start out, of course!).
My K9 seems pretty comfy in the 2500-2800 rpm range when cruising in higher gears.
Geez!..sure hope I haven't damaged anything:willy_nilly:
I've got 5K miles on it now with no leaks, no problems so far!

Thought it said that during break in period. I have 10,500 miles, runs better now then say when it had 4000 because things loosen up during break in. Definitely better at low r,s.
