Lowboy Sissy Bar Install

Hello folks,

Just purchased the clevis kit, rear pegs, lowboy sissy bar, & backrest for my 2008 Mastiff. Installed the clevis & pegs - easy as pie. However, trying to figure out how to remove the decorative plugs that come on the fender from the factory so that I can install the sissy bar. I noticed there is an allen-style bolt underneath but how does the little plug come out? Do I shove it out from the bottom (pushing up and popping it out)? Trying to do this without damaging any part of the bike, obviously. The sissy bar packaging did not include instructions for removing those plugs.

Thanks for all assistance!

Hey Samsom, I recently bought 08 pitbull and was playing around with same plug.

What is the trick to getting it out?

If they are like my 07 bulldog, then just unscrew the hex bolt several turns and use the head to push the plug out the top of the fender strut. Normally the plugs begin to pop out just after I loosen the bolt.

Make sure you tighten the bolts snug because they can loosen and fall out onto the rear drive belt and get sucked into the rear drive pulley cover causing damage to the belt and pulley cover. My strut plugs had no lockwashers and my sissybar had split lockwashers on the hex bolts.

I also place a very light film of grease on the sissybar ends that insert into the strut. This way it won't seize in the hole if it's a tighter fit.

My plugs are held in place with 2 allen head screws from below. Once both screws are out the plug still doesnt want to come out. There is a little push hole in bottom but pushing up only raises plug maybe 1/8" or so and still doesnt want to come out.
Dont have a sissy bar yet - just wanted to see what it would take to make one.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Loosen the bolts all the way and use the bolt to push out the plugs. The plugs are about 1/2" to 5/8" deep.

Make sure you put the plugs back in correctly - they have a little post that fits into the strut. Put some grease on the plugs before you replace them.

Even with both allen screws all the way out, plugs will not come out! Plug is loose and jiggles but seems to want to kinda "cam" out but just wont come.

Plug is about 1/8" by 1.5" long. I must be missing something. Surely this strut doesnt need to come off ??????

Thanks again for repies

Put a longer bolt in it... use a hammer. Or just jam a allen wrench up there and give it a hit.

This is a new style of reciever so as you mentioned it may be a cam style plug. Try rocking it up from the rear or front and see if it pops out.
You can also send BDM a note, they usually respond pretty quick.

WOW that is interesting. Got a pic of a new style sissy bar? Hope it don't look like some cast POS.

I'm just saying I have saw alot of sissy bars with the flat sides. They usually make them out of cast metals and look cheap to me.
