Leaking Baker Six Speed

Just purchased a 2005 BD Ridgeback with 11,000 miles in December 2012. Have ridden it for around 200 miles. Go out to check on it and I have oil leaking. I have determined that the oil is coming from the transmission. I located fresh oil leak behind the drive pulley, however I dont think this accounts for all of the oil leaking. I can not confirm or deny oil is leaking on the primary side. Primary case is dry, but I cant tell if that side of the tranny is leaking. I have decent mechanic skills and am considering replacing the seals on both sides, however I have never worked on a motorcycle tranny. After reading several posts now I wondering if there are other potential issues. My question is, what is the best course of action? Since I just got the bike, I do not know of its history and want to have everything working correctly. Any advice (to include rebuilding) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would pull the pulley and see if your main shaft has play up/down and forwrd and back. If you have play your main shaft bearing is worn. If no play you will need to change out your main seal and quad seal. You can go to Harley and get your seals. Here's the part numbers for them:

Main shaft seal - 12067B Cost about 8 bucks
Quad seal - 11165 Cost about 1 buck

Replacing seals is no big deal, and a great way to get to know your bike. There are some great threads that will answer most of your questions, but I'll highlight a couple things. You don't have to remove the trany, but the primary will have to come off, so you'll need to replace the small seal at the starter, and the one between the primary and the trans, and the o-ring at the engine. When you get down to the belt pully you will need a very deep well socket. I don't remember off the top of my head what size it is, but finding one that deep will be fun and possibly expensive. I bought a cheep short socket, and took it to a machine shop and had them cut it in half and weld a piece of pipe in between the two pieces to make it a deep well. this should be a lot cheeper than buying that deep socket. the thread for the nut will be left hand thread. ( I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong). Have fun, there are many here the will help if you get stuck.

if you get into and feel like you are over your head, you have 2 great people on here who are experts at rebuilds. Bobby Schulz and bigdogtech01. either will do you a good job.

Really appreciate all the great advice. I will dig in a little deeper and inspect the main shaft and see what else I discover. Hopefully it just needs new seals, but at least now I know what to look for. Again thanks for all the help.

I just got done taking off my primary and replacing all the o-rings/seals. Its a chore to do but can still be done fairly easy with the right tools.

Problem discovered. After removing the drive pulley and inspecting the seal, found very little oil leaking. Next step was to check door seal. EVERY SINGLE bolt holding the door to the tranny case was finger tight/loose . Going to replace gasket and seals, reassemble with red loctite, add oil, clean and test for leaks. Grateful, I found the loose bolts before any damage happened. Appreciate all the support!

Hello , I have had the same issue with my 6 speed Baker on my 05 Pittbull and found it was nothing more than the tourque on the drive pully ( belt pully ) backed off. I used an electric impact rented from a tool rental to tighten it back up and poop it went away. Make sure to check the fluid level after and I dont recal and someone here may know. The size of the pully nut ( thus the socket youll need is pretty large ) . hope this helps .. C

Got a little ahead of myself. As stated above, I fixed the drive side, however still leaking oil. Pulled the complete primary off and discovered trans seal on input shaft is leaking. With Bigdogtech01's much needed assistance, I have inspected everything possible, short of pulling the transmission. Talked to great folks at Baker Drive train and ordered new seals and gasket for tranny, complete seal set for primary, required parts for transmission updates (shim, clutch rod and small recessed washer). As soon as parts get here will reassemble everything and hopefully problem solved.

All the seals and parts ran around 130 bucks. Transmission looks good, no movement on the main shaft (both sides), just the leak.

Bobby,

It was leaking from the primary side, but the drive side also had fresh oil running some where. Originally the door bolts were loose, so after replacing the door gasket and shaft seals, I thought the problem was fixed........no dice, so I tore down the primary side and found the main seal on that side leaking also.

I checked the vent and it was clear. When I talked to Baker Drive, Mike informed me about that vent issue also and recommended the clutch rod update that basically solves the clogging issue. (Smaller diameter rod)

Appreciate the help and advice, parts get here Monday, should have it all buttoned up by mid next week and will post the outcome.

Thanks

Jeff

Update, received seals and gaskets from Baker Drivetrain and buttoned up the primary and RSD side. Test rode for about 4 miles and put it back on the stand.....so far so good. Will finish everything up tomorrow and really put her to the test.

Bottom line is both seals on the main tranny shaft needed to be replaced, however I believe the gasket on the tranny door was the ultimate cause.

The good news is that by reading the great post on this site and cleaning and inspecting the entire clutch system, shifting is so smooth and the clutch is much less resistant.

Hopefully everything is straight now and I can start raking up the miles.

Many thanks to everyone who has posted great info on how to .....everything Big Dog related.... Special thanks to Bigdogtech01 and Bobby Schulz:cheers:

I have a 05 Chopper that I bought last Summer and this Fall noticed the same leaking. The guy I bought it from said they had the seals done...but I don't know if I really trust him. Just called Baker this morning and it's only about $100 - $150 to bring it to them and have them do it...will probably go that route. My brother ended up having to replace all the gears and everything inside his to the tune of about $2200...so we DEFINATLY want to avoid that...
