Your really making it difficult for me to support you with the idea that you are a design engineer. Only to mention your flag waving about your patents.

I'm all for doing mods that either save money or improve on existing designs so great work on the kick stand!!!

As for the rest of the bantering back and fourth, we have an amazing group on this site that are full of information and are always willing to help out, some go way out of their way to help. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, not everyone is going to agree, suck it up and move on. This site is for meeting some great fellow Big Dog owners, not make enemies!!!

Well said Jeff, and thanks for your service to our great country!! Personally I love to see what people can come up with in the garage to save money, improve a part, or save a part that's hard to find, keep up the good work, I try doing the same. And don't feel you have to step back, just don't take comments to heart. I've always felt if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say it, but I'm not everyone. Although I didn't really see anything that would cause a battle in the beginning anyway, but I have thick skin, shit rolls off me like a duck!!!!

Keep the mods going and don't worry about what others think!!!

I feel your comment will get this conversation back on the correct track. I prefer to use this blog to trade ideas and offer suggested fixes for those who can use them. I myself have reviewed many. Some where not helpful to me. But with respect I felt no need to jump in and offer a negative comment. Others may find added value in whatever it is in question. So you see when someone makes negative comments on a volunteer constructive idea.
Than this draws a sword.

So my point is if you have a question by all means ask it.

If your response is only to destroy the Idea because (you) don't like it. Why bother responding?
Why ask a question give your own negative answer and then say your moving on in another direction?
All of this is information truly has no bearing on the idea. It doesn't help
further design efforts or even allow for a proper response.
By context it only promotes to discredit the idea and it's author in an attempt to lift the one taking this direction.

So here is a little background on me:
I have been riding bikes for well over 30 years. I have many modifications under my belt. My resume includes custom cars and winning awards, Building satellites that protect you and our nation from adversaries. Launching both tactical and recon weapons and satellites. Many of the rockets I worked, developed and launched are all over YouTube.
Launch day is incredible. I am one of the few that stands within 1 to 2 miles as 3 million lbs of thrust hit the ground. Standing there you could see the shock wave rolling towards you. Trees bushes etc.. bending as it rolls in your direction.
Looking something like the heat waves coming off the highway. The difference is you see it rolling across the land. Then it hits. With a very loud boom and then a bass-drum like rumble. Standing that close feels like a chick sitting on your waste pounding both her fist hard in the middle of you chest like the roll of a base drum. It is incredible to feel that kind of power from a rocket. And yes I do this as a government contractor after leaving the military 35+ years ago. It is likely one of the proponents that keeps me working there.

Inventions run very deep in my family including some very significant battle
changing infantry weapons. This is as far as I need to go here. My interest here are to support the experience of riding the dog.

I have had many at length conversations with Mr. Dave Saggans
about the PDM. We traded ideas for some time. His business v-twin went down. I felt this to be a loss but not before I was able to secure His electrical modification kit.
This problem with the BDM electrics is poison. His kit needed many up grades to get to the level of plug-n-play. He worked with me via phone, text and fax. There were many changes, suggestions and ideas traded.
To put it another-way I was supporting a path-finder roll with the plug-n-play idea.
Well my supplied kit is now complete, many minor changes were made in my shop and it now works awesome. I have not experienced so much as a hiccup in over a thousand miles. Wet weather or not. It's working real-fine.

Are there other bikes out there that could eat the dog alive? Absolutely, but the dog is like owning an old-school-muscle-car. It's just bitch-in! Something others don't have. All though mild the sound brings home memories.

The kit required plenty of rewiring, termination, drilling and routing. But with that said it is completely hidden and accepts accessories easily. Things like phone chargers, portable tire pumps, GPS units and more. It's only limit is the imagination.

I have also modified some parts from American Iron Horse to have them support our dogs with additional options. Only to allow me more choices with options.
I have value added experience with metal polish and finish. A take-away from the rocketry world.
Well I believe this will be my last entry here for awhile or longer. I still plan on watching what ideas you-all come up with. There are some great ones out there.
But as you say, I did get caught up in a banter affair. This is something I no longer need to contribute to. Human nature is interesting. What happened here is the same reason I'm not on face book or any other social media.
My narrow insight didn't see this coming getting involved here. There is always something new to learn.

Welcome form Suffolk, Va. someone else came up with the idea of just drilling a hole and tapping then screwing in a hardened bolt as a quick fix. The thread is on here somewhere:hi:

Let me know if it works for you.
I built up a little extra weld then filed it back. just a little grinding.
I tried not to bust to much chrome. Then polish work starts.
Hope everything works well for you.
I like this mod. I have better things to spend money on than a kickstand.

How about I sent you my lower leg this winter and you can weld mine up. :whoop:

I can weld, but not real pretty and not stainless. I can do the polishing out.

Welcome from Australia.

I to am have issues with the BDM side stand, the mod you have done is spot on.
I have read with interest the other mod's for this problem but i'm damed if i am going to trust a 2 cent Roll pin that your going to put side load on.:loony:

I picked up a new stand on fleebay, but it had more lean than the original, i then went to an aftermarket one, worse again.

Now i have 2 worthless stands, so i am going to do your mod, however i will TIG it up with M/S and have it re chromed. I will also have to straighten the mounting plate a few degrees. This will stand the Dog up to where i can confidently leave it unattended with out fear of coming out and find it laying in the gutter.

Welcome Jeff!

I bought a new stand and didn't like the lean either and thought that it was too much of it but now that you mentioned the possibility of the tire going down slowly it makes more sense.
However when we park our dogs on the side of the road here in Australia (to take a leak or have a smoke) we have more lean then you guys since we ride on opposite side. Parking it at home in the garage is different story.

Thanks for the how to.

Paul.

HA Ha, bud no fear of it falling over other than the left hand side, flat tyre or other wise.
the angle is just wrong.
To a point that i put the aftermarket one on and with 2 fingers i could lift the rear wheel off the ground.
So i have spent many hours since, sitting back with a beer in hand contemplating a fix.
I recon your spot on with your fix of the leg, however the the plate on the bottom of the leg does not sit flat on the ground............not even close. So my aim is to make everthing sit like it should.
One thing though with your mod, have you tried leaving it on the stand and pushing the bike forward to ensure there is enough weight to lock it in and not roll it off the stand.

This picture is wrong, it is in the none loaded position, when the bike sits on it, the 2 surfaces are parallel and fully contacted, not point contact, Big Dog didn't blow it. Recall not necessary

The bent leg in the picture below I believe comes about when you do this too many times. (2nd pic below) Now ask yourself did Big Dog design the kickstand to support the bike or to support it with a couple people posing on it and all that additional weight on the kickstand, I doubt it, safety factor sure, excessive weight I think not. Great pic by the way Bruce:2thumbs:

What happens if you pull out and forget to put the kick stand up? Does it fold up like the factory or will it throw you off the bike
Nice write up though

Jeff,
I said from the beginning that it was a "Nice write up though" maybe you misunderstood my meaning, and wanted an Attaboy or Good job or a pat on the back or maybe a hug:lol: There was no reason to go :willy_nilly:
I'm sure you know this, but Big Dog put out over 28k bikes and if there was a poll on how many fell over, for whatever the reason, the numbers wouldn't prolly reach 2%. No need for a recall.
As far as my type-o's, I'm a Design Engineer(no degree) not a Mechanical Engineer(4 year degree), huge difference between the two. The only thing that I have with degree's on it, is my thermometer:roll:

And Bruce,
I only used your pic for illustration purposes, sorry if some of the other comments offended.:whoop::cheers:
