Hey Tom, what would be the difference in the EPA motor? And did they do away with that after 05? I am curious because my 09 seems to have a lot more low end torque compared to the 05, or maybe I am just imagining it!:D

I am assuming that the only way to find out for sure what is in there is to remove the camshaft cover and look? Would it be stamped in the cam where I could see it fairly easy? franco did you see a big difference in the 585 cam?

the EPA motor had downsized intake and exhaust valves, used a smaller super E carb instead of a super G, and restricted the flow of the intake by using reducers between the intake and the jugs, among other things. (lesser compression ratio)

most of the newer ('07+) came stock with a 569 cam which is not really a bad cam, but if you like the low end grunt right off the line and still like it to be comfortable, the 585 is the one to go with and it doesn't really need to have any other work done to it, BUT, find a knowledgeable technician to advise you. (CYA) you can go larger, but you are getting into more motor work.

My 07' came with a 546 and the difference was noticeable enough to hear the difference with the 585 when it was running:whoop:

You should really back off on the push rods before you pull the cam cover off. My experience was if you pull the cam cover off, the hydraulic lifters will expand along with the valve springs expanding and you'll never get the cam back in the cam cover hole and back on the alignment pins for the cam cover. If it were me I would buy the 585 cam and have it so when you check to see whats in there and it not the 585, you will have it to put in, cause you will have to adjust the lifters anyway.:2thumbs:

good thinking, and as said, anything bigger and there will have to be motor work done to increase comp. and to change out springs/rockers not just to keep the motor together but to get the most out of the cam you put in. then you have to start chasing the rest of the drive train beefing it up before it gives. the way it sounds, the 585 is the best all around bang for the buck.

For those of you who got offended by this post, please accept my apologies. I received an infraction for this post and it was simply meant as a return joke to pknowles.

Again, sorry.
Why would get an infraction for that remark? Seemed pretty straight forward and simple to me.

If you do it, follow Bowhunters "how to" its an excellent write up:2thumbs: Oh, by the way, whats the chances you could ask the previous owner if he knows whats in it.

I have read that and it is an excellent "how to" thread, I would definitely follow his step by step instructions to do the job! As far as getting a hold of the previous owner, I am gonna call the shop I bought it from and see if they can call the guy and ask him what's in it, thanks for the info Ker!
