Just for kicks - parting out a Dog

Ok guys - So I've got a beautiful 2003 Chopper. Black/Chrome. Never down. 6500 miles. Runs like new.

It has factory BDM extended controls, sissy bar/pad/struts, tach, and the bike looks great!

I have had my share of issues (mostly fork seals and electrical).

I had it all fixed perfect before spring - ready to ride / sell - put it up for sale at 10k 6-8 weeks ago. 1 week after Memorial Day - I can even get a bite. Not one phone call !!!!

So I ride it to bike night and the signals/brake lights go out (again), and the fork seals leak (again) and I need to fix it (again) to sell it. And for what price? 8k minus repairs? I'm over it.

Heres my question - what is this thing worth parting out? I'd like to put a $ on the major items - can you guys take a guess? And any interest?

Engine (107) $______
Tranny $______
Primary $_____
Front end $_____
Wheels/tires $_____
Skins $_____
Frame with title $_____
Sissy bar/struts/pad $1000?
Tach $400?
Extended Controls $300?

after that - there is still a a TON of little stuff to add to the total. I'm curious what the total of parts above would be? Can u guys throw darts at it? Could be a fun thread!!

The big problem with parting it out is:
1- you have to take it all apart first.
2- you have to take pics of every part
3- you have to list each part with pics and description on CL and or Fleabay
4- if you sell on Fleabay you then have to crate and ship parts and Fleabay and Paypal will get 12%
5- if you sell on CL you have to deal with a lot of idiots....
6- you won't get as much money as selling the whole bike outright.

My 2 cents.... been there, done that and got the T-shirt... I know how ya feel. good luck.

Engine (107) $1500 - $2500 if you are lucky
Tranny $900
Primary $150
Front end $250
Wheels/tires $300 - $500
Skins $250
Frame with title $800 - $1000

Engine (107) $_____4,000 if you are lucky_
Tranny $______ 1000 if you are lucky, one out of a 05 been floating around for 1500 for a while
Primary $_____200 14 years old
Front end $_____maybe 400 if you are lucky with the seal issue
Wheels/tires $____maybe 800_
Skins $_____ 500 for the set
Frame with title $____ a new frame is what 1000_
Sissy bar/struts/pad $1000?I would say maybe half this .
Tach $400?
Extended Controls $300?
These numbers are just a wild ass guess, but put you just over the 8 grand mark. Sell it as is and save youself some labor of the teardown. We are talking about used parts that are over 13 years old. Wishing you the best.

Problem is it's an 03 the Harley parts are a dime a dozen. Handlebars, controls, forward controls, etc. If you had an 04 I'd say you could probably net another $1-1.5k between the tranny and controls

I just went through my estimate based on what I think it's worth take it with a grain of salt but I think my prices are in the ballpark and will move at the price. I am pretty avid on fleabay so I seen it. I see you at $7k might be missing a few things. So let's say $7500 to make up for missing parts

Also ask Derek and Donna probably hard to give frames away. They have to sell rolling chassis for $3K basically what the forks and rims cost.

Worth Something

Not sure what it's like up there, but I don't think I could have given my bike away over the last 8 weeks. We've had like 3 or 4 good riding days. All the rain and crappy weather has to be killing bike sales around these parts.

Right now you're looking @ around $6 to $7 thousand for your bike. I know, I'm in the same position only about a thousand less. Parting it out is a real pain in the ass. You get about half as much as you wanted and have a whole bunch of shit you can never get rid of, plus you spend half your life dealing with mailing the shit out. Best you can hope for is to find some unsuspecting dufus and convince him that he should buy it for parting out. Hold onto it and just let it sit in a corner and about ten years from now bikes will be back in popularity again. This stuff runs in cycles.

If you tried buying a bike in April you haven't been able to even ride it home yet

My problem is I dont feel like dropping another $750 into the bike because I went on a 12 mile ride. What do I do on my next 12 mile ride? haha I'm to the point where I wont spend more on it just out of stubbornness. You guys are all coming up to 7-8k ish. I bet with the misc - maybe more. No paint required. Either way, I throw another $750 at it and sell it for 9k, I net 8k. Shit - the bike looks like new - its beautiful! I bought it 2 years ago for $9250 needing work. I have over 13k into it currently - will hit 14k once fixed. Then I hold my breath till it sells? I'm afraid of the next breakdown. I'm venting I know - sorry about that!! Looks like either way I come out with the same net profit (loss).

Soooo tempting to try to sell the engine/tranny/primary/starter/clutch for $4500 firm if I can get it. Hell - you can even test drive it.....ha!

Yes - weather - I was all ready to sell a month ago!!! Now the weather breaks, and my controls are hanging off and fuel tank on the work bench.....ha! Its ok tho - Im not as frustrated as it sounds. It will sell - or I will put it in the truck and take her to Namz for a rewire once I get re-interested.

Quite the dilemma, I'd hate to see a good-looking Dog like that get tore apart. I'd say put 8 on it and stand on 7 just in case you change your mind. Don't get mad, you asked just my :2cents:

I had my bike up for sale ( a 2004 chopper in mint condition with a open belt drive and many custom parts) for 6 months on CL and Ebay. The very best offer I got was $7k IF I shipped it to TX for free. It's still in my garage... I also sold the whole primary with clutch for $150 on ebay and the guy stated "not as described" because it was missing 1 bolt. He got his $150 back and I got screwed... Sell it outright for what ever you can get...
