jackshaft not engaging

my pproblem is when engaging the start button, the jackshaft shoots out , but just enough to were it verly hits the the fly wheel, but not enough for it to turn the fly wheel, can someone give me a better idea whats going on

Is the mounting bolts on the starter to primary nice and tight?
How do you know how far the jackshaft is moving?

yes they are nice and tikght , because id hit the starter with the primery cover off , not long and hard , not to wear it would break teeth,

and another thing id hear it hitting the flywheel but not catching

Sounds like the bolt holding the end of the drive shaft is come loose or broke. You'll need to pull the primary cover off and check it

Or something weird like happens to me....the spring goes past the snapring retainer....do as MrWright suggests. You will discover the problem. Keep us posted.

Does your starter make a whirring noise when you hit the start button ? Now that you can see the end of the jackshaft is it turning or is it locking up? If it's locking up you may have a weak battery but if you hear the starter turning but the jackshaft is not, the starter clutch is possibly wasted.

well ive got new battery ,330 cold cranking amps, the starter is working great , the jackshaft, is shooting out very hard and fast , but when it gets to the flywheel it dont go on to it, so it can turn it over, theres no way to adjust the starter up or down because it fits in the groove on the primery houseing, had a good friend of mine aint seen in long time come over and look at it and hes been working on harleys for about 15 yrs now and checked it out and he even said its all put together right, andtheres nothing wrong for it not to work , blew his mind too,i mean if you pull the jack shaft out by hand it fits right into the flywheel, but hit the starter, and it night go on the flywhhelk 1 time out of twenty trys! its just a pain in the ass !my next step is to just buy another jack and all the stuff that comes with it , before i have tobreak down and buy the starter and see if that works

Sounds like the starter solenoid is bad.

Ok I got the new jackshaft in and put on, I tryed it, the first time, it went right into the flywheel as if it wuz brand new, everytime pass that, it's doing the same thing as it's been doing

As I said, likely the solemoid not pushing the jackshaft out as far or as hard as it should.
