I took my new bike out for a short ride and heard this god awful noise coming from where? It sounded like it was on the left side-primary. It was making the noise in fourth gear. When I downshifted it seemed to quit. But when I went back into fourth again, there it was. Terrible!.

So like a good member I searched and searched our forum. Before I get wild and think it may be the tranny, I thought I'd check the primary chain tension (it did seem to jerk or buck back and forth at slow speeds in first gear). So anyway, I took off the derby cover and pulled the clutch to see if the chain moved in any way--; it did not. So I put a socket on the clutch hub nut, and it seemed very, very easy to spin off. I put it back on and it never tightened. It just spins and spins. Should it have been that easy to unscrew?

Okay, I got the allen wrench and removed the bolt, but now the nut wont come off the bolt. It's like it is stripped. I can hold the bolt in place with the allen and spin and spin the nut which doesn't moved in either direction.

I guess I was lucky when I first got it to come off, but I think it was stripped at the factory (it's a brand new bike). I've read the torque should have been 150 ft lbs. I don't have a service manual yet....didn't think I'd need one until my first 500 mile service.

I'll try to attach some pics. And yes, I am clueless when it comes to this stuff, but I am trying. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Do I need a new bolt and nut?

honestly, i think you are the first K9 250 on here. may be a while before you get any advice. but in the meantime, yes, that bolt DOES look like it is stripped. IMHO, there are several things that need to happen. remove the clutch assem., run the threads with a thread chaser making sure ALL the old metal is cleaned out (wash out with brake cleaner), completely clean out the primary, and replace the bolt and nut. MAKE SURE there are no contaminants in the clutch pack. good luck.

these are only the ramblings of a non-mechanic, so make sure you get good advice from someone who knows.

Thanks Tom for your quick response. You are talking "uncharted territory" for me.

Earl, I have no idea. I'm pretty bummed this being a brand new bike and all.

thats the clutch adjustment nut and the primary chain would not move if you pulled on the clutch only the aluminum plate would move in and out to engage and disengage the clutch.

the bolt looks fine to me as its not threaded all the way. Read about adjusting the clutch.

hell

go to your clutch adjustment on your down tube and unlock the jam nut and then crank in the connection so ur making the cable smaller. then put that bolt back in the hole and tighten it up until you feel a resistance. After you feel this the back it up a half a turn and tighten the lock nut against the pressure plate. Then go back up front and adjust the clutch on the down tube until you have a little play in the clutch. When you pull the clutch you should see the clutch moving in and out. I know that there is a section on adjusting the clutch with pictures in the tech do it yourself section of this forum if you can't follow my instructions.

sorry grab the end of the bolt in the vice and spin that thing off then chase the threads replace nut

sorry missread

you can get one of those at a HD dealer

good luck

It's obvious that they have made upgrades/changes since the '05. I just took my clutch hub nut off to replace my broken clutch basket. If there are any similarities, the clutch hub nut should be located under that cover plate. Definitely time to get that service manual. Mine had a cover plate and throw out bearing that had to be removed before you could even see the clutch hub nut. Nothing like yours. What's worse is you're still not any closer to finding out what is making that noise. If it only happens in one particular gear, I would think it's the gears/transmission, not the clutch or primary chain.

remember, everybody, this is the new K9 250 with the different primary/trans. Hoat is probably giving the best info so far except the going back to the dealer you bought it from. but brad is bringing up some good points. good luck.

Clutch adjustment nut. That makes sense now. But as mentioned, once I get that back in order, that probably wasn't even the root cause of the noise. I'll have to work on that when I get off work. Thanks!
