This How to is probably not for everyone but here goes. I like tunes on long rides makes the miles go by faster. I am not into ear buds or anything stuck in my ears. In addition my pipes are so load at times I have to turn my music up so load to overcompensate that I end up with a headache. So my solution was to fab noise-cancelling headphones into my helmet.
Started with a pair of Sennheiser head phones. You can get these off e-bay for $50 bucks.
A little disassembly
I added foam to the ear holes of the helmet for a closer fit.
Sewed in velcro to the helmet liner
Used spray adhesive to secure the other side to the foam, note don't spray the foam itself, just the vercro strip. The glue soaks into the foam all the way through and causes a clump-o-foam.
Stuck some velcro to the phones
And the other side of the foam inserts
Stick inserts into the helmet
and secure the on/off switch for the noise-cancelling feature with Velcro
I tucked all the wires into the helmet around the edges. The only external wire is the end that goes into your I-Pod, mp3 etc. This way you can secure your music device or pocket it. When you stop and need to get off the bike or remove your helmet, all you need to do is unplug from your music device and your free. No tangled or twisted wires. If you need a longer wire to you music device you can add an extension cord available at Radio Shack. Also if you don't want the snug fit of the foam inserts, they can be removed and the phones stuck directly to ear cups in the helmet liner. The whole unit can be completely removed from the helmet in about 30 sec. so it's not a permanent thing.
