How to: CR replacement

I had a rod approximately 2 1/2" long come out of the compression release. What would cause that. I assume I have to replace it with a new one?

I used pauldeepsea's install to do mine, I didn't remove the gas tank though.

A question to all. Has anyone ever replaced the electric releases on there Dog with manual ones? If so, what were the Pros and Cons of doing it. Assuming one could be found with the same thread of course.

Not sure S&S still has them. There's a mount to activate them, you put on your handlebars.
