Being I just did my fork service as described in my thread... http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/how/2498-how-service-your-forks.html

You could also just drain from the bottom and fill from the top without pulling the whole front end. Don't mind my pics with the forks off, but I think you can access all of this with the unit on the bike and the wheels still there as well.

Remove the lower cap

Then remove the plug, which also happens to seperate the lower leg from the rod dampner inside the fork tube. But it should let you drain the fluid.

Then simply remove the top cap/plug as described above and refill.

Just maybe another alternative...

Yes this is correct. I was just reading my manual and it says nothing about removing the fork tubes. It does say to remove the wheel and brake caliper.

So is it only necessary to take the forks a part when you have a bad seal and need to replace it?

the reason I did the job this way was the mechanic at my old dealership said that it may be difficult to remove the drain plug with out a what he called a butterfly speed wrench. he said without the speed, the whole inside of the lower legs might spin inside and the drain plug not come loose. there is also a crush washer that is supposed to be replaced and they didn't have any in stock when I was doing the job.

You have to seperate the forks if replacing the fork seals.

Narrow... I do agree with that idea but didn't have any problems doing mine. Also, there was silicone on my plugs.

has anyone done this and had a problem with out the wrench?

Where can you get this speed wrench? I've never heard of one.
