Help Picking A New Cam

Ok so ive had a s&s 585 cam now for about a year i have the thunderheart ignition, thunderjetted the carb, d&m spike air cleaner and big radius pipes and its ok in my honest opinion but isnt quite all that i was hoping or looking for.....so here i am again looking for a new cam. After reading everyones input on many past threads i decided to see if all you guys that know all about cams can help me make a decision. Im looking for a cam that just sounds nasty (think the term is overlap) i want something thats deep and i guess you would say slow. I heard a fellow big dog owners bike one day and it was just wicked sounding with a 107 cu in in it to boot but i never thought to ask. So im looking for that as well as i like my 585 when it comes to low end cause honestly i ride it like i stole it but if i could i would def love more low end as well. So i guess to sum it up im looking for a cam that has a lot of low end and a slow deep overlap that sounds badass any help or advice on that and what all the cam numbers mean would be greatly appreciated or if someone knows or has what im looking for even better and let me know. Thanks

FWIW,the pipes and air cleaner you have are NOT conducive of helping to make horsepower.
Your best bet, after fixing above, would be to do the heads, and a different cam at the same time. Then you'll notice a big difference, with no loss of low end power.:2thumbs:

I would listen to John. He is one of the top V-twin builders in the country and has been around for several years.

As to carbs, XXX Carbs is a site sponsor and a lot of us are using them with good results. I'm sure there are others that work just as well.

All spot on comments. Thanks for the insight on John - now we know, need some engine advise ping him -:lol::lol:

Speaking from experience - the D&M did not do it for ME, looked great performed OK. This is widely debated on this forum and I will leave it as - each to his own.

The suggestion of a tripple X carb - again from experience recommend that - a great compliment to your pipes (but going no where with that spike - in my opnion - NOT starting a debate here :lol:)

The cam along with decking the heads sounds pricless for your style of riding -:up: but do consider the rest.

Good luck and ride SAFE :2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

Another round please
Your spike sucks. I had one, had it dyno'ed and it killed it. I cut the spike off at the elbow, slid on a K&N filter. Big difference. Looks cool to. I run a 650 woods cam in my 117.

take the heads and jugs off and send to john sachs in florida. he will most likely recommend and can supply the s&s 640 cam. if you get your deck height when you are removing your jugs he can cut them and the heads (after some port, valve and spring work) to get the compression that cam wants. the more compression the more TQ at lower rpm. IMO

RB racing pipe

intake i have a hack job like barhop

you should let sachs recommend a total package.

S&S 600 is a good all purpose cam but requires valve springs to match lift. If you have the TP rocker boxes instead of S&S I would not go more than a 600 lift cam. The TP boxes have a valve alignment problem causing excesive guide wear.

If you plan to go a little farther and increase the compression, then I would start with taking about 0.040" off the cylinders to get a zero deck height. Each motor is a little different as to what needs taken off. This alone should bring the compression up to about 10.5:1. From that point on I would consult with who ever does your head work as to which cam works best with there heads and your type of riding. There are a number of top notch people around the country who do quality head work.

like John said - with that pipe and air cleaner it don't really matter what else you do - those 2 parts are going to drag you down big time in the performance stakes
