Having battery issues with K-9

Have you tried keeping it on a battery tender over night? I have an 08 and I still have the original battery. I keep it on the tender all the time. If I don't my speedo doesn't work the first time I start it, but it will start. These bikes have strange electrical quirks. Why, if you can figure it out let me know!
:iagree:

Chris.. I've had same problem... leave it at ALL TIMES hooked up to the Bat Tender. :2thumbs: (mine is a K9 and came to me with an HD battery)

Brand new battery and only sitting for a day without a tender I would think it is something other than the battery unless the new battery is bad. Ditto to what Brew & awg stated
I agree.....when I go on weekend trips I don't carry a battery tender with me. A day or 2 without a tender should not be a problem.

I had a K9 that did the same thing and it was the Volt Regulator that needed to be replaced. If you have a Volt Meter you need to check if it's charging the battery. I see you're in New York. If you're on Long Island PM me and maybe I can shoot be and help you.
Im with you. I have a Mastiff (basically the same as a K9) that was doing very similar things. The VR actually caught fire one time. I replaced it with a Cycle Electric and havent had a problem since. It also cleared up a bunch of other electrical problems I was having. All related to the charging system.

But keeping it on a tender is basically a must do.

Not sure if you seen this on Ebay, but I bought one of these off Ebay and it's been very valuable to me. It lets me know if my charging system is acting up or if my battery is getting ready to take a dump. IMHO it's a great asset for troubleshooting that I've added to my scoot... Just saying...:2thumbs:

Thank you everyone for the good advice and help. One thing I did not realize is how critical it is to have the bike always connected to a tender. As I mentioned I don't have power to the area where my bike is stored, however that will soon change. Also, the place that services my bike came and picked the bike up today. The first thing he looked at was the battery and he mentioned that I should be using a gel battery over an acid one. I'm pretty sure this guy knows his stuff as he has had his shop in the area working on Harleys and customs for over 30 years. Most everyone trusts him and his labor is much cheaper than a dealer. I know that nothing is better than being able to do the work yourself, but I chose to let this guy to do the repairs just for peace of mind. I was told that I should be up and running with in a day or two. I was feeling so relieved that I'm going to treat myself to a dakota digital speedo and maybe an S&S dual runner if I can get enough beer in me. Here are a few pictures I took about 2 weeks ago before I started having the troubles.

Thank you. I was searching all over for the chrome version of the stock aluminum rims and then all of sudden an ebay seller named ShovelheadKicker had them for sale at a good price. I'm really happy with them.

Mines' not charging either. I just checked it running. It's only putting out 12.4-12.5 at idol and at 3000. Is that an automatic VR or should the stator still be checked?

Kinda what I figured. Took the VR off to check the bolt for gunk for grounding then broke one putting it back on. A wrench turner I am not...

Battery tender fixes alot of battery issues. It definitly fixed mine on my cars i dont drive everyday.
I've started using a tender but I checked the batt voltage while running and there's no difference from when it's not, even at 3000RPM. So it's more than a batt issue. Damn bike has less than 3000mi and I'm dealing with this crap.:bang: Not to mention the Dakatoa Digital went out...

Try to stay positive Ronson1977. I was bummed while my bike was in the shop 2 for two days not knowing what exactly was wrong. I got the bike back today and I could not be happier. Turns out I had a bad battery and my plugs were fouled. I rode over 75 miles today and loved it. I hope you solve you issues and get back to riding.

Id rather they made these bikes so you didnt have to put a tender on them all the time. I think its crazy that they draw this power from the bike. Never had another bike do this to me and Ive owned over 30 bikes
