Having battery issues with K-9

I was just wondering what could be the reason why the battery in my K-9 keeps dying so quickly. I bought my K-9 new last August and the battery worked fine for about 2 months. As soon as we have one cold night, the next day the battery would try and turn the bike over maybe once or twice and then its dead and then just clicks when you try to start the bike again. I replaced the battery with the exact same DECA battery from a local battery shop. This battery was brand new and fully charged. I'm continuing to have the same issues whenever its cold over night like around 45 F. I have to either charge the battery or jump it with cables from my car literally every time. Either this brand of battery is garbage in cold weather or I've just had 2 bad batteries. For example, on Saturday I was riding and it was about 60 out. The bike sat on Sunday and today its 85 out and I got about 2 tries to start the bike and then the battery dies. Any suggestions on maybe a better heavy duty battery ? I also made a post over the weekend called "K-9 owner losing a little faith in bike" where I was having a unrelated set of problems that have not been resolved yet. Many people on here offered good advice but I still have not solved that particular problem. I'm just very frustrated at his point. It's 85 and sunny out here in NY which is totally unheard of for where I live at this time of year. EVERYONE with a any kind of a bike is out riding but me.

Have you tried keeping it on a battery tender over night? I have an 08 and I still have the original battery. I keep it on the tender all the time. If I don't my speedo doesn't work the first time I start it, but it will start. These bikes have strange electrical quirks. Why, if you can figure it out let me know!

I keep the bike in a large shed which is about 100 feet behind my house. Unfortunately I do not have a garage and there is no power in the shed to be able to plug in a battery tender. I have to remove the battery each time and bring it inside to charge it or push the bike through my back yard and into my driveway to be able to jump it. It's just a pain. For something that costs this much and is new, I should not have to be dealing with issues like this for years and years.

the EHC does a 2% drain on the battery /day just to keep the information. it's gonna drain the battery quickly, that is a given.

have you given thought to the possibility of a solar powered battery tender, that may be an option.

Thank you Woodbutcher for the idea. I did not even realize something like that even existed. That could def solve this particular problem. Is there a specific one that you could recommend that you think would work the best ?

Hey KennyBob - The battery that is currently in my bike that keeps failing is the DEKA YTX20L-BSFP that is putting out either 270 or 310 CCA. I think its 270. Maybe that is the problem. Maybe I just need a stronger battery like the one in the link that you have provided. Do you think its worth a shot ? Thank you.

Dude, I would crank that puppy up and put a meter to the battery terminals while it's running and make sure your charging system is delivering the proper voltage to your battery. You also might want to check your circuit breaker and make sure it didn't pop either... Just saying

It could be part of the problem, you still need to keep that dog on a tender and check the bat poles often :2thumbs: I got one of these batteries in my bike, cost me around 180 bucks with shipping . The old timers use this battery so i got me one, one can learn alot from the old people. :flag::flag::flag:

You need a battery tender on any battery in that Big Dog

......

So hear we go
1) Battery should be a minimum 310 cca's I have a Deka 310 cca in mine no issues..
2) Keep it on a tender. Run power to the shed, underground.
3) Check your charging system. Should be 13.5-14.5 at battery while running.

I would check the charging system also. It could be discharging the battery as its running. Voltage regulator?

run a 100ft extension cord with a tender and keep it pluged in year round , your bike will start with no problem as long as the battery is good. 117in is alot of motor to turn.I was advised to always keep a charger on the bike. enjoy that Bigdog

Brand new battery and only sitting for a day without a tender I would think it is something other than the battery unless the new battery is bad. Ditto to what Brew & awg stated

be careful what battery you buy. have bought (2) 310 cca batteries in the past that ended up being 270 cca re-badged pieces of crap. thing is they had interstate labels on them. now have braille.

I had a K9 that did the same thing and it was the Volt Regulator that needed to be replaced. If you have a Volt Meter you need to check if it's charging the battery. I see you're in New York. If you're on Long Island PM me and maybe I can shoot be and help you.
