I came by an extra tool bag that I would like to install on the lower front frame. Are there any do's and don'ts or any tips on hanging this off the frame

Thanks!!

I have mine mounted in that area. Only thing about it is that it catches all the crud that the front tire kicks up. But that is a good thing I guess since it's not getting on the motor!!!

I personally don't like doing it it blocks the wind off the lower motor. We put
on vented oil filters, oil coolers and then block the wind off our motors.

Apply a layer of electrical tape to the frame first, to stop the chaffing and wear that you'll get from the road grime. Kinda depends on the color of your frame I guess, but tape is easier to replace every so often than the painted finish...

If you do put the bag there, make sure you put protective tape to prevent the bag from wearing at the finish.....I did not do that - and wish I did :bang: :bang: :bang: .

I've had a bag hanging down there for almost 3 years, I've torn a few off going over speed bumps or onto the trailer though. They always seem to start hanging low after a few miles. Last weekend I tapped two 1/8" holes in the aluminum block sitting on the frame there and made a little bracket that extends under the bag and holds it up off the ground. Now I can really throw some tools in there and not worry about it dragging. Getting air to the motor was a concern, but it only blocks the lower case, no fins there anyway, and since putting on the bracket the voltage regulator is in the breeze too.

Yup - it keeps that front motor mount area real clean and is my least favorite place to clean.

Also hang mine from the area and other than getting the bag dirty as hell, herld up good and plenty of space to insure air flowing around the VR and the engine. Have not notice any wear or gouging on the frame.

One thing I did do, for the tools and stuff in the bag, I put them all in a zip lock bag, pressed the air out then took that bag and put in a vacumn bag and pull all the air out and heat sealed. That way I insure that all the tools and misc in the bag, stay nice dry regardless of the weather and thus work fine if I ever need them.

Had mine ( WITH tools ) hanging low for the last three years there. Also have the BDM oil cooler on so I'm not worried about blocking the filter.

For mounting, I ran HD zip ties under standard 3/4 inch strips of black nylon straps. Pulled the zips as tight as I could get them, then wrapped the nylon around the tubes and used a soldering iron to melt/seal the ends for a clean look. From what I can tell it hasn't moved at all over the years.

For carrying tools, I bought a plastic tube filled with bungee cords from Home Depot that was around 4 inches across and 8-9 inches long. Filled that with my allen wrench set, wrenches, zip ties, pliers, knife and a little flashlight. That little "emergency kit" has helped out a half-dozen guys over the last two years. :2thumbs:

I have mine mounted to the trees and resting on the headlight because I didn't want to block any air flow to the voltage reg or the engine but this may not be a big factor anyway but it also protects the front of the gas tank to some degree, however I just went through a procedure that I didn't need to if I would have thought a little before I mounted it. I just spent a whole weekend with a Dremel and wet sand paper getting out all the gouges in my upper tree from the rivets on the tool bag and yes, I do have the one with the chrome buttons but it was not these that caused the damage but it was the smaller ones that secure the bag together, who would have thunk it? They are so small but they did major damage to both my tree and headlight housing. I can't do anything about my headlight housing short of having it rechromed, but I did fix the tree. BTW I did find a solution to the problem if anyone wants to mount their bag to this location. I went to a fabric store where they have rolls of Velcro in black and about 1" wide. I bought a roll of the soft side of the Velcro (not the loop side) which has a self adhesive backing. I mounted the Velcro to the edges of the tool bag (covering all the rivets) and the the back of the straps in strategic locations. This worked out great and because the strips are black they are hardly noticeable and provide a very soft and durable barrier between the bag and the bike aluminum. It took me about 15 minutes to cut the strips and mount them, wish I would have thought of this before, could have saved me a lot of work.
