Well this could have made for a bad day......

06 K-9 11,500 miles....was just setting out this morning on a 200 mile highway run when, 1/2 mile from my house, this happened:

I don't recall seeing this happen to anyone else....there was no indication of any stress in the chrome before this happened......called the service center and now waiting to see if this might be covered.....will let you know....cheers

There is "RUST" on the edges. It had to be cracked for a while before the rust would show up, unless the pictures were taked several days after it cracked??

Pictures taken today 10 minutes after it happened.

10 minutes.?...there had to be an internal crack where moisture/humidity came from inside for that rust to be forming already..I was a traffic investigator for about 8 years.
there is no way that just happened. It had to start from the inside for several weeks..
your are very lucky...odd it cracked from rear and not from the front where all the pressure would be...It may have been there since it was new. it just took time to weaken. I would contack BDM about it.

Absolutely agree that this was a festering problem and, therefore, an accident waiting to happen....

Thankfully and strangely, the part that held is still rather solid.

Waiting to hear back from the service center.

doesn't look like the weld failed to me, that's about an 1/8" off the joint. maybe they had too much heat in the original weld and caused undercut resulting a stress fracture of the parent metal?

Interesting point, gearsmithy, thanks......I wish I knew more about welding to comment in a meaningful way.

Dingo, contact Chris04mastiff (member here), I gave him a brand new pair and don't now if he used them since they are for the BDM controls.

That is incredible thing to happen. I've never ever seen anything like that happen. I'm glad you were close to home and everything turned out for the best!!
