I agree with WAYKOOL the starter drive,Bendix gear teeth and clutch ring gear aren't meshing correctly, it more than likely has a worn spot on the clutch ring gear, and when you roll the bike in gear either forward or backward its turning the ring gear away from the worn spot enough for the Bendix to mesh together, and once the engine starts spinning it spins past the worn spot, I have seen this same exact thing on several engines, I cant see it doing this every time though, does it do this every time or most of the time? if it was just a worn Bendix rolling the bike in gear wouldn't make any difference,if it was mine I would try starting the bike and if it grinds pull the primary and look at teeth, its time for a primary oil change anyway with all that grinding.. good luck..Dave.
Yes Dave it does it every time. There is no oil to be changed in the primary. It’s an open primary. From what I can see the teeth on the exposed gear look fine. I would have to pull the starter to see the teeth on the bendix. Sounds like a week end and a wallet draining project to me.:(

 waykool, CC is one of the longest and most respected members of the forum. think first about what he says and then maybe make a joke. don't want to piss off the old guys.

I think what he is trying to explain is the same issues the LSD bikes had with the old "Uncut" straight teeth starter drive gear. Most models in 2004 and all models RSD, went to the "angle cut" on the drive gear to make it line up and not grind like they used to. My cousin used to put his bike in gear and roll it to move the clutch hub just slightly before hitting the start button a second time and it wouldn't grind on him.

My 2004 used to grind alot. I found if I just "bumped" the start button everytime before I pushed and held the start button in to start it, the starter drive gear would line right up and not grind.

good to hear there actually used to be a problem as described. not helping waykool and jennjenn but at least now maybe they won't feel so alone. thanks bdm. even though it doesn't help matters, it's still good to know.

Yes but he replaced the system with a open belt drive in which both the sarter jackshaft gear and clutch gear have been replaced. I'm not sure what belt drive your running but mine has never made any grinding with or without my belt drive. If your running a bdl system they have come up with a new system that has a flex coupling in the center to eliminate any alignment issues.

OMG then I would hope the "old" guys would have a sense of humor and if you can see there was a response from the same person who made the "joke" seriously what is the jackshaft and a valid question for a new v-twin owner.

Let me also state that each and every response is appreciated as this is our first v-twin bike and we want to know everything about it like we do our others. Just don't want to do any damage to it and want it to run like it should. The bike does run well but there are a couple of "corks" to be worked out that is why I posted the thread in the first place. So once again thanks to everyone for the responses and hopefully with a little luck we will get it all worked out.

Sorry I can't explain things the way they are supposed to be as my fingers sometimes type faster than my brain computes. The belt is not loose by any means but if you roll the bike back just about a step the primary belt doesn't want to roll anymore (tight). There is no play in it it just seems to actually lock up does that make sense? Then the bike starts and runs fine just wondered if that was something anyone else had had happen and if it's normal or not. I guess not. As for the neutral thing I guess I will be taking her for a spin and trying out those suggestions. I will get back with ya and thanks again!

sounds exactly the same! I'm glad we are not the only ones ok at least that gives another tip.

On another note bummer TBD says they are closed for biketober fest so will have to wait till next week to give them a call. So for all of you that are attending Daytona have a blast and ride safe!

waykool, sorry if i came across too hard. insult or bitching was not my intention, just a little heads up. and i know that CC can definitely stand up for himself.

check out the thread above for the clutch adjustment. it has worked well for everyone. if you can get the dog to daytona this weekend, i think the factory techs will be on hand to work their miracles on the sick dogs. check with tonya at the tampa big dog tent, she can point you in the right direction.

Do you have an open primary? If it is reliably starting EVERY time you rock it back, but grinding most of the time otherwise, you could have a misalignment or improper shimming on the starter jackshaft. You rarely see this with closed, wet primaries, but on open units it can be a problem. Listen to these guys about the battery, if you don't know how old it is, change it, it's probably toast and will cause problems. Change your battery, then check to make sure your starter bolts are tight. Your primary belt (or chain!) goes from your motor to the tranny. Your final drive belt goes from your tranny to the rear wheel.

Oops I just noticed there was a page 2, sorry. So it's an open primary just take off the jackshaft cover, and ream out that bushing in there a little bit. You can do it by hand with some 180 grit sandpaper. Clean it all up and put some antiseize in there at every oil change. If it continues, keep reaming until it doesn't. If you ever get in a jam and it just won't start, just loosen one of the jackshaft bolts a half turn and it should start, then re-tighten. I keep an allen wrench handy for this exact purpose. There is also something called a bulletproof jackshaft that helps with this issue.

Get it here:

Scooters Performance

As for your neutral issue, there is an adjustment but it's a bitch to get at, you have to cut an allen wrench shorter and open the top of the tranny so you can see down in there. Best thing to do is just grab neutral as you roll to a stop, or rev the engine like these guys said. Just remember this thing is closer to a farm tractor then it is to your sportbike and the tranny will seem clunky in comparison.

Congrats on your first V-twin. The Snap-on tool man will soon be your best friend. You're in good hands here though, there is an answer for everything, even jackshaft issues. :)

wow thanks everyone....lol at the tractor compared to sports bike so true! Completely different riding experience for sure.

I just took the bad dog for a ride...she runs well but I still couldn't get the neutral thing. I tried and tried but I guess practice will make perfect. I am used to a little click click when I up or downshift on my gsxr on this it's more like clunk clunk and I'm scared I'm going to break it! I got her into neutral before I started her tonight then I tried without the roll back thing no go it still made that horrible noise so rolled it back and started up nicely so for now I guess that's what I gotta do.

First I want to get her in for a dyno tune then change out the battery, then work on that stuff. There is so much I want to do but step by step it's not like she's not running right

You guys are all awesome I appreciate all the tips and the picture is great thanks for taking the time to do that. We'll keep you posted! I'd love to head over to daytona but work is just not going to allow that.

Ok got to say one more thing....I love getting this bike into 3rd ready to shift into 4th and hit the throttle.....omg I have to hang on for dear life it's AWESOME!!! (especially when there is some young punk in his little hot rod thinking he's gonna beat this bitch's ass) NOT!!!

Thanks Wood for the advice to the new guys. I've learn to be thick skinned around here, can't let anyone get to you. They will learn the hard way when no one helps them out because of their silly mistakes. Don't worry waycool, I don't hold grudges.

:hi: a word to the wise. stay away from interstate batteries. they are not what they are advertised to be. stated as 320cca. but actually 270cca and very weak. the last one i bought (just got my money back on it) after being on the initial charge before i put it in the bike was only 12.85 volts and the beast needs 12.8 to crank. not very much in reserve.

Glad to hear it is running good once you get it started...especially when you are in third gear...lol These bikes are not non-high performance...ya just gotta be on it long enough to figure out how to get what you want from it. Good luck with the starter issues.

Tractor, Aye! Even compared to my Harleys.

The "neutral thing" - don't over rev, just kind of ease it up to ~2500. If it's a super hot day and your hand is about ready to cramp at a "never-ending stoplight", it may take a couple of tries (difficulty inversely proportional to need). Definitely easiest when you can plan your stops and it just kinda goes in natural like as you coast in to the landing pad.

"Grab a gear and hang on for dear life" - yeppers, tha's a Big Dog! Ain't it cool?
;^}

Welcome to the forum BTW

I have an 03 mastiff that does the same thing. That you guys are discribing here.
Well we are going to get it looked at next week after biketoberfest. Hopefully we can get it all straightened out. First we have to get it adjusted for FL since it just got here a few weeks ago from Denver so it's not running right and hopefully it's not the transmission. Keeping our fingers crossed. It seems to be making that funky noise more and more lately....sound like some kind of teeth grinding away (not good)
