Dude just pull the float bowl off and find out what jets are in there. It needs more fuel, sounds like alot more fuel. If you can tell me whats in there I can tell were to start with jets. If its that hot the way it sits, putting on a dyno without fattening it up may lead to MOTO-EXPLODO

Read my how to on checking jets and spark plugs. It will show you how to check your jets. Granted in the how to I took the carb off but that was for a reason. You wont have to.

Ans as said. You can order the jet kit from about anywhere. Even the hd dealer.

If you live close to scranton Pa i would look at it for you
Sounds like its real lean
Mike
Thank for the offer Mike. I think Scanton is a few hours from the Lehigh Valley. I'm going to pull the bowl and see what I have. It's the only way I'll learn about these things.

Thanks Gas. I'll pull the bowl and see what I have. I'll let all you know.

Again, much appreciated.

I talked to Mike at Thunder Cycles in Florida. Thats where I bought the pipes. He recommended using a 32 int. and an 80 main.

Any comments???

I agree with the runnin' lean theory, but I'd like to add that excessively retarded timing will cause the pipes to glow as well. I learned this on a small block Chevy. On the first start-up after a rebuild, I didn't have the distributor timing right, noticed the headers glowin. When I advanced the timing, the glow went away immediately. Just a thought.....

assuming you still have the stock ignition you can't adjust the timing. I would take the pipes off and put new gaskets in there and make sure you don't have aleak there and also check for leaks at the intake. Get a carb tuning manual or print from the S&S website and follow the instructions. It should explain how to tune it by tell tell signs of richness / leanness when riding the bike. Don't trust spark plug reading too much - very difficult to do with any degree of accuracy, especially with todays fuel. Having said all that maybe the walls of the exhaust are just thin as Ray said. One things for certain though - if it is running exremely lean you could be doing damage

Yes, I still have the stock ignition. Are the exhaust gaskets pretty much standard. I had pipes off to do the clutch cable. Is the gasket just a thin metal gasket that kinda resembles a split washer? Im going to the Harley Dealer tomorrow to see if they have some other stuff I'm looking for. I'll get them too.

When checking the intake for leaks...all I need to do is spray carb cleaner around the carb and intake and listen for an increase in idle????

I would be willing to bet that all the bikes on here will have their exhaust head pipe glow while sitting still at a certain RPM. I have seen all of them with stock exhaust, V&H 2-2 and 2-1, and crazy custom exhaust, they all glow if you warm them up and twist the throttle up to around 2000 RPM or over. Does not mean it has an intake leak or needs to be re-jetted necessarily. But, if the bike has just started to back fire excessively and run like shit then it may have an intake leak.
It may also just need an air/fuel screw adjustment and or a new air/fuel screw.

Well with that said..I'll still pull the bowl and see what I've got going on in there. The bike runs good. But backfires excessively. At night its a pretty good light show.

No that is the flange retaining clip. The gasket is in the head... like this. Tapered steel mesh.

Just pull the carb bowl and check the jets. Tell us what you have in there and we'll direct you. You must do as I said in my carb/jetting how to. Once we get thru that, if there is still a problem we'll go from there. I'm willing to bet you have 2 small a int jet and the accel pump is turned out far.

Thanks. I'll do that today and get back to you.

I think I'm going to wait until the weather warms up to mess with the jets. I changed out the fluids and pulled the exhaust. The gaskets were in bad shape but I dont think there was a leak. I replaced them.

Question...Is it better to wait until the weather warms up to simulate riding conditions before I adjust anything carb related? I'm still not sure I want to mess with them yet.

I also have very short pipes, Grumpys Ground Pounders. I had a set of D2's and they are similar. Get a set of torque cones. If you goto S&S's website there is alot of info on how to jet the bike. No matter what you will get some popping on decel, but this is different than backfiring. If you're backfiring it's probably lean, either on the intermediate jet or the mixture screw. Did you look at the plugs? Changes in your exhaust won't affect your jetting so much as changes to the airbox.
