gas tank liner deteriorating

Energy One
Just bought a 2007 bulldog with EFI with 2900 miles. The bike sat for 3 years. Brought it to the shop to get serviced and gas tank cleaned out. The mechanic says the liner inside the gas tank is deteriorating and he is being cautious in an effort to clean the tank not wanting to affect the flow of gas and clogging the fuel injectors. Does anyone know of the proper method to cleaning the tank?

I see your in CA. I tried to clean my tank but gave up and paid a professional to do it. http://www.gastanklining.com/
They are located in North Hollywood and not cheap but well worth the price so if you are close enough you could save a lot on shipping. Some guys try to do it themselves but in the end I am very happy that I never have to worry about it again. Good Luck its a pain in the ass if you try to do it yourself and you never really know if you got it all cleaned out.

Mine did too to some degree as well.

I would replace the sock filter on the fuel pump clean teh tank out the best as possible and monitor it. It may not get much worse.

You may need to clean the injectors too. Not too bad of a job, done it many times

EFI is considerably easier due to the opening in the tank.
The big thing is the paint.
If it is fine and you want to save it you have to seriously mask it or the cleaners will get to it and ruin it as will the sealer.
The newest liners using novalac resin are the best and make sure you seal around the top of the gas bung with novalac resin before installing the paint saver or you will end up with the bubbling paint issue.

Any particular product you use @KaptinAmerika?

Especially for around the gas cap. I’m having issues with my flush pop up that is painted.
I started using the liner kits from Caswell as they are selling the kits with the Novalac resin.
There certainly may be others out there also
One thing I have learned is one time around with the liner during installation is not enough to cover the tank completely
It generally takes at least two times of putting the resin in, rolling the tank around, dumping it back into the can, thin it slightly, let the tank cure for a couple of hours and repeat so when you buy the kit don't scrimp on the size of the kit. Get one that will cover more than just one tank.
Novalac Resin, it is my understanding, is what the military uses, among others, for lining their aviation fuel tanks so you know it is going to handle gasoline easily.
If relining your own tank and you don't want the paint damaged buy the liquid mask and apply multiple heavy coats then wrap the tank in a stretch wrap type plastic like they use for wrapping pallets before shipping before masking off the rest of the tank with blue or green painters tape. I cannot over stress this step when it comes to protecting the paint from damage. Plus at the end it makes it super easy to just pull all the masking off.

I have been trying to get to a how to video for the gas bung but there just is no time.
Maybe a forum member can assist with a how to.
I buy the novalac resin off EBay in a 32oz volume.
It only has a one year life so buying too much in bulk is a waste.
We may, at some point, offer a little kit but right now I do not have enough help to make up what we already have to make for inventory with other items so it may be a while.
You only need the above plus:
popsicle stick (or other mixing utensil)
a small mixing pot
The smaller the better as we have found that too big a container makes it more difficult to get the mixture correct.
a small paint brush like the kind used for painting model airplanes etc. I buy mine in bulk from craft stores.
heat lamp (needed to make the resin cure in two hours otherwise it takes forever) any halogen light will work
a piece of 60 or 80 grit paper
blue or green painters masking tape

Mask off the paint around the gas bung, use newspaper or other to cover the rest of the tank, so you don't get the resin any where but where you want it.
Put a paper towel down inside the bung to prevent debris from falling into the tank.
Sand the upper area of the bung down about a 1/4" to clean metal
Sand out around the edge of the bung about 1/8" to clean metal
It may require using a razor knife to get any excess paint and body filler off but it is important to get down to clean bare metal so the novalac bites and seals properly.
Wipe with acetone a few times. Once will not get all the contaminates off so do it several times. Each time with a clean side of the rag
Mix the resin per manufacturers directions
Carefully apply the resin to all the areas of the bung you sanded to bare metal
Pay extra attention to the top edge of the bung where the rubber seal makes contact
You want a smooth distortion free ring that the seal can bite into
Put your heat lamp no closer than 12" for two hours
Once cured clean the paint saver and it's rubber seal thoroughly
If the seal is bad get a new one. Do not try to reuse a bad seal
Apply a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to the paint savers rubber seal and install
Make sure you mask off the paint with cardboard before using the paint saver tool in case of slippage by the paint saver tool
No cardboard, one slip and your crying in your beer over scratched paint
Use a bar through the paint saver to get it tight and make sure you are applying constant downward pressure on the tool to prevent slippage
Done correctly you do not need sealant on the paint saver or its rubber seal
Done incorrectly and don't come bitching at me because it did not work
We've done it here dozens of times now over the last 2 years and not a single issue and no new bubbled paint

The above procedure also works great if you have removed your paint saver and are using a Harley style cap.

I am new to biker forum. I really like people helping others in a time of need. Ernie, thank you for the link. I sent it to my mechanic and we are going to use the company you recommended. They will give me peace of mind. Thank you every one, for your input as you all saved me a lot of research time. Again thank you Ernie.
