gas caps

BD did hear about the caps swelling, I live hear in Wichita and made several trips to BD complaining about the caps, started about 4 years ago.
After talking with Will (now at C.A. Jones) I found that the paint savers were installed with J B Weld into standard tanks probably purchased through Drag Specialties.
Anyway Three weeks ago when trying to get gas the threads seized so tight that when it came loose the paint saver came with it, so I cleaned out the Glue, which was fairly easy and now I just use the whole thing as a cap, no problem. Still have no idea where I got gas with ethenol.

Damn! Called Jamie and they will no longer take orders for the $5 replacements. Apparently they got a lot of calls and saw a good thing coming. They now only sell them "packaged" with the caps for $49 a set, which is still prety good considering. They did not reduce thread size. They originally manufactured the threads out of a plastic and are now using nylon which is not affected (supposedly) by the ethanol.

 That sucks! They offered replacements for a product of theirs that failed. Now they want to profit from it. I was about to praise them for customer service, but now I think they are A-holes. Stand up do the right thing LANDMARK offer a reasonable solution to your f-up! We all know the replacement threads cost very little to produce.

E-Mail sent to Jamie at Landmark expressing my displeasure with their decision.

Response from Jamie @ Landmark

"Jay,

We did manufacture the gas caps for Big Dog, but Big Dog decided to knock off our gas caps and get them manufactured at a lower cost overseas. Hence, you received an inferior product. Unfortunately, Big Dog did not convey this information to their customers and continued to sell these gas caps under the Landmark name. Yes, we did replace only the threads to help out the Big Dog customers who were left stranded by Big Dog, but decided not to mix a quality product with a non-quality product so that is why we are now selling the gas caps to all Big Dog customers with the re-designed nylon gas cap threads. This is not due to greediness, but about quality. We want all of our customers to have high quality products and you did not receive that from Big Dog. We are also trying to be proactive as we have been made aware of problems with the gas cap tops as well as the threads.

I hope this explanation is helpful. Thank you for your business.

Sincerely,

Jamie Allen"

I think I would do the same thing if I was him if these are knock off gas caps. However I would be curious as to when BDM went to these knock off gas caps.

I asked that same question in a reply...The answer was "2001".

Here is the problem I am having. Jamie said that BD "continued to used an oversea cap set, and still used the Landmark name". Are the tank inserts Landmark? Funny, somehow the replacement threads I recieved from Landmark fit exactly into my 2004 "oversea" caps. Same locking nut and sleeve. Something is not adding up. At first Landmark was very willing to help us out. Then I guess they underestimated the amount of phone calls they would get with people with messed up threads. If they were not their caps since 2001 why did they allow BD to use their name for years afterward? They were Landmark inserts but not caps? I don't know.

I spoke with Jamie at some length about the problem. I knew what it was, he didn't volunteer it. He said Landmark originally made the threads out of plastic and had come to understand this was a problem as ethanol increased in percentage in gas. I told him someone had mentioned that they had corrected the problem of the swelling by changing thread size, which I said didn't make any sense and he agreed. He said that they had changed the threads to nylon which was not effected by ethanol. He did not offer the BS story about BD using knockoffs (although with all the other mickey-mouse shit they did, I would not put it past them). Anyway I think Landmark has seen and heard that folks are not happy that they have chosen not to sell the corrective part at a fair price and are now trying to gouge buyers and have decided to blame it on BD who is deceased. It is what it is and Landmark should stand behind their shit ..... they made it, they sold it and they should stand behind it. They should actually send out the replacements for free.
